Event Horizon is free to stream on Tubi

Nearly three decades after its 1997 release, Event Horizon remains one of science fiction’s most unsettling journeys into the unknown. Paul W.S. Anderson’s film is now available to stream for free on Tubi.

Cosmic horror works by placing humanity beside forces it cannot understand. Rather than relying on familiar threats such as killers or ghosts, it explores insignificance, incomprehensible entities and the frightening possibility that reality has rules beyond human control. Films including Annihilation (2018), The Thing (1982), Color Out of Space (2019), The Void (2016), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Endless (2017) and Coherence (2013) each approach that idea differently.

Event Horizon combines cosmic horror with gothic imagery, psychological trauma and extreme body horror. It was a box-office disappointment and received a poor critical response on release, but its uncompromising atmosphere has helped it develop a lasting cult following. The film’s appeal comes from making the void feel like a route to something much worse than death.

Sam Niel Event Horizon

A rescue mission aboard a nightmare ship

The story begins in 2047, when a distress signal arrives from the Event Horizon. The experimental spacecraft vanished during its maiden voyage seven years earlier. Captain Miller, played by Laurence Fishburne, leads the rescue vessel, joined by Dr William Weir, played by Sam Neill, who designed the missing ship.

Weir attempts to explain the vessel’s experimental gravity drive before the crew boards. However, the ship itself provides the first warning that something is profoundly wrong. Its abandoned interiors and a disturbing recording turn a conventional recovery mission into a confrontation with an apparently impossible evil.

The crew enters the dark spaceship in Event Horizon

Anderson gives the ship a visual language rooted in guilt, religious imagery and human overconfidence. Seen from a distance, its silhouette recalls a giant crucifix. Inside, it resembles a decaying gothic mansion more than a clean, functional spacecraft. The gravity drive’s power becomes a symbol of technological hubris, while the crew’s fears and past trauma begin to influence what they see.

The vessel can feel almost alive as it isolates its occupants and turns them against their own judgement. The film shares territory with Alien (1979) and Solaris (1972), but its cathedral-like production design gives it a distinct identity. Anderson explained that the design drew on Notre-Dame Cathedral while developing a gothic horror story in a spaceship; a retrospective discussion is available from The Ringer.

Cosmic horror meets body horror

Sam Neill as Dr. William G. ‘Billy’ Weir, mutilated and driven mad aboard the Event Horizon.

What begins as a rescue story gradually becomes an assault on the senses. Characters exposed to forbidden knowledge struggle to process what they have witnessed, and the film presents that loss of understanding in brutally physical terms. Mutilation, torture and disturbing visions make the horror unusually visceral.

That approach recalls Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, where contact with a hellish dimension can strip away a person’s humanity or corrupt them beyond recognition. In Event Horizon, guilt and trauma intensify the effect: the ship’s visions are shaped by the crew’s private fears and vulnerabilities.

The film is far from flawless, yet its central idea remains effective. Reaching for primordial knowledge carries a terrible cost, and rational people are not equipped to withstand what lies beyond the limits of perception. The result is a bleak, claustrophobic nightmare with a visual style unlike most space-horror films.
