Spoiler warning: This article discusses events from Lanterns Episode 7.

Lanterns has taken a grounded route through the Green Lantern mythology, focusing on the murder mystery surrounding veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and trainee John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. That approach has divided DC fans, particularly those hoping for more of the cosmic world associated with the comics.
Episode 7, “The Jordan Boys’ Legacy”, suggests the first season may be ready to widen its scope. John uses Hal’s old ring to summon a stored version of Hal’s consciousness. Although this younger Hal remains difficult and prickly, the pair eventually travel to a dead planet connected to the alien insurgent Antaan, whom they encountered in 2016.
The planet also holds Sinestro, Hal’s former mentor. His arrival, combined with the episode’s emphasis on fear, has prompted a compelling theory: the finale could introduce the Sinestro Corps, the yellow-powered enemy force from Green Lantern history.
Why the Sinestro Corps theory fits

In the comics, Sinestro creates his own corps after being exiled to Qward, an antimatter world. Its members use yellow rings supplied by Qward’s weaponers, drawing strength from the ability to inspire fear. Sinestro’s aim is to impose order across the universe through fear rather than the Green Lantern Corps’ ideal of willpower.
The storyline is explored in The Sinestro Corps War, one of the major Green Lantern comic events. The conflict includes villains such as the Anti-Monitor and Cyborg Superman, while also setting the stage for Blackest Night.
The finale teaser appears to underline the connection. Sinestro tells John that fear may be the most powerful force in the universe, while the planet itself contains a chemical that forces John to experience his worst fears. A Sinestro-led plot built around fear would therefore be a logical escalation of the season’s otherwise restrained story.
John Stewart or Hal Jordan could change the outcome

The series may still have a surprise in reserve. Before Lanterns arrived, the Green Lantern: Earth One books by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko were promoted as an influence. The show’s more militaristic version of Hal’s uniform reflects some of that influence, but the comics also contain a major possibility for the finale: John Stewart eventually uses a yellow power ring in the second volume.
That twist could make John the most unexpected candidate for the Sinestro Corps. He has rejected the Green Lanterns and the life his parents planned for him, while training himself to be fearless. The series could reinterpret that conflict by making John a Yellow Lantern who treats fear as something that can be controlled or even used for good.
Hal’s fate offers another route. The teaser strongly suggests he may return through the same Manhunter technology that saved John from near death. Comic readers also know that Hal once became the villain Parallax. Later stories established Parallax as an entity representing pure fear, so its presence on the planet could connect Hal’s resurrection to the Sinestro storyline.

A larger DC universe may be taking shape
Whether the finale introduces the full Sinestro Corps, a yellow ring, or an early version of Parallax, Lanterns appears ready to move beyond its terrestrial mystery. The series could finally give its central mythology a more overtly cosmic direction while preserving the tension between Hal and John.
For viewers following the wider entertainment landscape, the finale’s approach will be an important test of how the new DC universe balances familiar comic-book ideas with a more realistic crime-thriller format. It may also deliver on promises that earlier Green Lantern screen projects left unresolved.

The first-season finale of Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, October 4.
