Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios has contracted sharply. A first-party organisation that once included 14 development teams now has only three game-making studios remaining, alongside its publishing division—and further changes may still follow.

From a broad first-party network to a smaller core

In 2021, the Xbox Game Studios group comprised:

  • 343 Industries
  • The Coalition
  • Compulsion Games
  • Double Fine Productions
  • The Initiative
  • inXile Entertainment
  • Mojang Studios
  • Ninja Theory
  • Obsidian Entertainment
  • Playground Games
  • Turn 10 Studios
  • Rare
  • Undead Labs
  • World’s Edge
  • Xbox Game Studios Publishing

Microsoft’s wider gaming business expanded through its Bethesda and Activision Blizzard acquisitions. However, the collection of teams directly associated with Xbox leadership has steadily been reorganised, transferred, sold or closed.

The Initiative was an early sign of that shift. Microsoft established the studio as a major new team, revealing a new Perfect Dark project at The Game Awards in 2020. Following years of difficult development, Microsoft announced in 2025 that the project was cancelled and the studio was closing.

Studios moved, sold or absorbed

The restructuring accelerated in June 2026. Double Fine and Compulsion Games were sold back to their management teams, while Mojang stopped reporting through Xbox Game Studios and began reporting directly to Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma.

Matt Booty, Microsoft’s chief content officer, has also announced a substantial reduction at 343 Industries, now known as Halo Studios. Its remaining staff will operate as a support group for Activision.

Rare and Age of Empires developer World’s Edge have moved under Activision. Obsidian Entertainment now sits under Bethesda, and what remains of Turn 10 has been folded into Playground Games. Undead Labs has also joined Double Fine and Compulsion as a management-owned studio.

Ninja Theory has not yet found a buyer. Unless that changes, the developer may face closure in the coming months.

For readers following wider arcade and gaming news, the changes illustrate how dramatically major publishers can reshape their development operations between projects.

What remains inside Xbox Game Studios?

The publishing group is still operating. It manages titles including 2025’s Ninja Gaiden 4, as well as Kojima Productions’ upcoming OD and Physint.

Microsoft Casual Games, responsible for releases such as Microsoft Solitaire Collection, has been transferred to King, the publisher behind Candy Crush.

The current Xbox Game Studios structure is:

  • The Coalition
  • inXile Entertainment
  • Playground Games
  • Xbox Game Studios Publishing

That leaves three active game-making teams: Playground Games, inXile Entertainment and The Coalition. Each has a project due within the next year, beginning with Gears of War: E-Day in October.

The timing of the announcements may be significant. Microsoft appears to have waited until Halo: Campaign Evolved launched in July before confirming the changes at Halo Studios. Further decisions could similarly be delayed until other games reach release.

A restructuring that is roughly three-quarters complete

Booty wrote in today’s post that the actions completed since July, including the studio divestitures, represented approximately three-quarters of the previously announced restructuring.

The remaining development slate may determine what happens next. If inXile’s Clockwork Revolution launches during the first half of 2027, Microsoft could potentially make further changes without disrupting projects that are close to completion. The game itself follows a crime boss who uses time travel to build wealth while keeping working-class residents trapped in slums.

Microsoft has historically struggled to establish a consistent internal pipeline for major first-party games. Xbox’s first major exclusive success, Halo, depended on outside talent, while later genre-leading properties often came through acquisitions. The latest reset suggests Microsoft is increasingly comfortable relying on the publishers it owns to manage the risks and uncertainty of large-scale game development.

From expansion to consolidation

When Microsoft Studios became Xbox Game Studios in 2019, Booty wrote back in 2019 that the organisation was well placed to deliver a diverse range of exclusive games.

His latest message maintains that Xbox is positioned to offer a strong line-up. In the same announcement, he pointed to an October 6 town hall where the wider Xbox team will review progress and look ahead to what he described as one of the company’s strongest game line-ups.

Whether that promise is supported by a smaller internal studio network will become clearer as the remaining teams release their upcoming games.
