Xbox is beginning to introduce Mythic achievements, a new completion category awarded when players unlock every standard achievement in a game. The system is broadly comparable to PlayStation’s Platinum trophies, although Xbox’s version comes with an unusually lengthy audio cue.

As reported by The Verge, Mythic achievements began appearing in the Xbox PC app after a recent update. TrueAchievements reports that they are tracked separately from regular achievements, are not affected by downloadable-content achievements and award 0 Gamerscore.

Players must first complete all of a game’s base achievements before the Mythic reward can be unlocked. Completing that requirement triggers a dedicated on-screen animation and a new sound effect.

For readers who enjoy the history of game interfaces and cabinet design, the change is another reminder that small audio and visual cues can give a gaming system its own personality. Our Arcade Blog covers more developments across the wider gaming and arcade scene.

The newly revealed sound runs for almost 15 seconds. That makes it a substantial amount of fanfare for a notification most players will only hear after completing an entire game, and some players may find the extended effect excessive.

Mythic achievements were previously teased by Xbox boss Asha Sharma in August. Xbox insiders had also reported seeing references to the feature for several weeks.

The rollout is taking place during the same week Xbox announced further staff reductions across its studios, following a broader reset that began in July and included significant layoffs. That timing gives the new achievement system a particularly conspicuous place in Xbox’s current news cycle.

Whether the feature becomes a welcome completion milestone or simply an overly dramatic notification will likely depend on how often players encounter it.
