Counter-Strike 2 has received one of its most unusual updates, combining a new 3v3 mode with gameplay presentation changes and a surprisingly personal addition: collectable pet chickens.

What is new in the Counter-Strike 2 update?
The headline gameplay addition is Rush Hour, described in the patch notes as a fast-paced, queued 3v3 mode. The update also changes the way map bans operate and includes substantial revisions to bullet and blood visual effects.
Valve also added chickens that players can raise. Eggs may appear in weekly drops, eventually hatching into small pets. Chicks can grow into several adult varieties, including regular, Polish and Silkie chickens, with multiple possible colour variations.
How the chicken pets work
These companions are separate from the game’s well-known skin economy: they cannot be traded. Once a chicken hatches, its owner can give it a name, photograph it and place it on their shoulder in the loadout screen. The pets can also accompany players into lobbies.
There is a temporary element to the system. When a chicken reaches adulthood, it leaves, meaning players must begin the process again with another egg and a new pet.

Player reaction to the new pets
The chickens are not entirely self-sufficient. Players need to return regularly and feed them; neglect can cause a pet to abandon its owner. That is less severe than a neglected Tamagotchi, where the consequence is death, but it still creates an incentive to keep logging in.
Some players have viewed the feeding mechanic sceptically. One Reddit user wrote that the feature looked like a weekly reminder to play and feed the chicken.
Counter-Strike 2 remains Steam’s most-played game, recording a 24-hour peak of more than 1.4 million concurrent players. However, the game reached its lowest peak player count since January 2024 in the previous month. Another player instead argued that Valve should focus on anti-cheat measures, while widespread cheating has been cited as a major source of frustration.
Cute companions may add personality, but they are unlikely to address those larger concerns. Players deciding how to build a dedicated gaming setup can also consult RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide for practical advice.
