Prime Video has released the first trailer for Madden, a biopic about football coach, broadcaster and video-game figure John Madden. Nicolas Cage plays Madden, while Christian Bale appears as Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

The film follows Madden through three defining chapters: his coaching career, his years as an NFL commentator and his role in the video-game series that carried his name. The trailer presents Cage in a heavily transformed performance as the larger-than-life football personality.
Madden remains one of the NFL’s most successful coaches. Among head coaches with at least 100 games, he has the league’s highest winning percentage: 112 wins, 39 losses and seven ties, producing a 73.1 per cent record.
John Madden’s football career
Madden coached the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978. During that period, he guided the team to its first Super Bowl victory in January 1977. He left coaching in 1979 because of health problems and burnout.
He soon moved into television, joining CBS as a colour commentator on NFL broadcasts. Madden won 16 Sports Emmy Awards and became known for explaining football in accessible terms, helping broaden the sport’s appeal to viewers.
His broadcasts also became famous for unexpected detours and comic observations, including a memorable tangent during a 1995 Seahawks pre-season game.
How Madden became a video-game icon
Although his coaching and broadcasting careers were substantial, Madden is perhaps most widely recognised through EA’s football games. He contributed his name, likeness and football expertise to the project, and was credited as a designer on John Madden Football, released in 1988.

Who is in the Madden film?
Alongside Cage and Bale, the cast includes Kathryn Hahn as John Madden’s wife, Virginia, and John Mulaney as Trip Hawkins. David O. Russell directs the film. His previous work includes Silver Linings Playbook, Three Kings and American Hustle.
Russell has received nominations for Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs, but has also faced allegations of verbal abuse on set. Several cast members reportedly left the production over Russell’s use of the n-word. The film also features comedian Shane Gillis, who was removed from Saturday Night Live after using ethnic slurs.

Madden release date
Amazon plans to release Madden directly on Prime Video on 18 November 2026. More information about the film is available in this Madden film listing.
Whether the finished film plays as a sports drama, a character study or a video-game origin story, its central subject connects several important parts of modern gaming history.
