Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to introduce a long-requested setting in Warzone when the new game arrives later this October. For the first time in the series, players will be able to choose whether past-game cosmetic items appear during matches.
Activision announced that a new “Operator Skin toggle” feature will launch with Warzone Season One for Modern Warfare 4. The publisher also confirmed that the existing “Carry Forward” system will remain, allowing previously earned Operators and other cosmetic items from earlier Call of Duty games to move into Warzone.
Players who prefer a more consistent Modern Warfare 4 visual style can now hide those older cosmetics on their own screen, including the more unusual crossover designs. The setting will cover operators used by enemies, friends and squadmates, both during a match and in the lobby.

When the toggle is enabled, older operators and skins will be replaced locally with default cosmetics designed to fit Modern Warfare 4. The affected player does not change for everyone else; the replacement only applies to the person who has enabled the setting.
The feature will not remove a player’s own chosen appearance from their personal view. For example, Stan from American Dad would still appear as Stan to the owner, while another player with the filter active would see a standard soldier instead.
Activision says the Operator Skin toggle will be disabled by default. Its explanation is that Warzone has increasingly combined Operators, weapons and experiences from several recent releases, creating different expectations among players. Some enjoy that shared variety, while others want the battle royale to better reflect the latest game.
A response to years of cosmetic criticism
The setting addresses a recurring complaint about increasingly playful and disconnected crossover cosmetics in competitive shooters. Both Call of Duty and Battlefield have faced criticism over the direction of their character items, but this is the first time either franchise has introduced a player-facing toggle of this kind.
There is also a commercial risk: if other players can hide a purchased skin, its visibility and perceived value may be reduced. Activision appears to be balancing that concern against requests from players who want a more grounded battlefield presentation, as well as wider fatigue surrounding the franchise and the response to last year’s Black Ops 7.

What happens to future Modern Warfare 4 skins?
Activision’s announcement indicates that Modern Warfare 4 cosmetics will remain visible when the toggle is active. It does not clearly explain how the system would handle a later MW4 item that takes the same humorous or crossover approach as earlier releases.
The publisher has said those types of skins are not planned for Modern Warfare 4, but further details about the filter may be needed once Season One begins. For now, the option gives players control over how much of Warzone’s past cosmetic catalogue they see without preventing owners from using those items themselves.
