Bungie has outlined a substantial roadmap for Marathon, shifting its extraction-shooter design towards a wider mix of competitive, cooperative and lower-pressure experiences.

The plan covers the next year of development and includes the game’s first dedicated permanent PvE mode, a Team Deathmatch option and a more welcoming introduction for new and returning players. Bungie says the goal is to expand the game beyond its original high-pressure, winner-takes-all PvEvP focus.

In its blog post, the studio said players should be able to choose between quick runs, longer sessions with friends, build testing, direct competition and deeper exploration of Tau Ceti IV. The revised structure is intended to support those different play styles within one evolving game.

Symbiosis brings permanent PvE in December

Following the Nightfall refresh scheduled for October, Bungie will release the Symbiosis update on 8 December. It is positioned as a major step in the game’s future, adding more ways to play and explore without the constant threat of another Runner.

The permanent PvE mode will let players explore, experiment and tackle challenges without being hunted by opposing players. Symbiosis will also introduce a competitive Team Deathmatch mode and an expanded Perimeter map with a significant visual overhaul.

A new Shell called Bishop will join the roster. Bungie describes the robot samurai as a fast, high-performance hunter-killer built around speed, surprise and powerful bursts of melee damage. Players will discover how Bishop fits into different crews and modes after the update arrives.

New-player support is also being rebuilt. The onboarding process will be improved, while a new social space will include an integrated firing range for practice and experimentation.

More changes planned for March 2027

The broader evolution of Marathon is planned for March 2027. Bungie’s current list of additions includes:

  • An interconnected structure linking permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences
  • A new onboarding experience
  • A reworked Cradle and deeper Shell progression
  • More focused quests and narrative content
  • New alien enemies
  • An entirely new zone

The studio says development will continue throughout 2027 and beyond. That long-term approach will be important for a live-service game aiming to serve both experienced extraction-shooter players and people who want a more accessible entry point.

A broader direction for Bungie’s extraction shooter

Marathon launched in March and received a warm response from critics and players. Bungie has also acknowledged that the game could be overly difficult and too limited in its available activities, particularly for a broad audience.

The planned changes are designed to make the game’s lore and systems easier to experience without removing its competitive identity. Permanent PvE, Team Deathmatch, improved onboarding and new exploration spaces should give players more control over how they spend time on Tau Ceti IV.
