Gundam Rogue Orbit Could Be a Standout Mech-Action Game
Bandai Namco’s Gundam Rogue Orbit is shaping up as a fast, stylish action game designed to welcome newcomers. Its original setting avoids requiring knowledge of five decades of Gundam history, while its combat is approachable rather than built around punishing Soulslike difficulty.

A hands-on build shown at Tokyo Game Show presented a mobile suit game with echoes of Armored Core, Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry. Those comparisons make sense, although Rogue Orbit feels less demanding than 2023’s Armored Core 6. The emphasis is firmly on close-range attacks, with swords, lances and a whip sword delivering exaggerated, high-impact action.

The result is energetic and accessible. Attacks and movement are not heavily restricted, and combat can feel deliberately generous rather than relentlessly technical. Boosting or firing too rapidly can cause the Gundam to overheat temporarily, but the demo rarely made resource management feel oppressive.
For readers interested in the wider arcade and gaming news scene, this is a notable modern take on mech combat: spectacle is central, but the controls are intended to remain approachable.
What is Gundam Rogue Orbit about?
Players take the role of RE-X, pilot of the Gundam Helix. With the Haro companion Vii alongside him, RE-X battles invasive alien creatures known as the Apocalypse. The playable Tokyo Game Show build offered three different weapon assemblies, each encouraging a distinct approach.
- Assault Sword: includes a lock-on Anchor skill that attaches the Helix to enemies.
- Whip Sword: combines a close-range blade with an extended whip for attacks at greater distance.
- Sword Lance: uses thrusting attacks to maintain mid-range pressure and keep opponents away.

Skills, movement and mech customisation
Each assembly comes with its own Tactical Skills and AP Units. Tactical Skills are powerful attacks that can fill the screen with beams, explosions or rapid melee strikes. The Tactical Move is a high-speed manoeuvre used to evade attacks and reposition behind enemies.
AP Units are more limited-use abilities, including deployable shields. Pilots can equip two AP Units at once, creating room for different tactical combinations.
The game’s more powerful combat layer is called Over-Rise. Attacking enemies fills its gauge, allowing players to strengthen basic attacks and automatically evade incoming blows for a short time. Over-Rise can also be consumed through an AP Unit Burst, triggering an ultimate attack that concentrates a huge barrage of energy on one target.

Gundam Rogue Orbit is also planned to offer extensive visual and tactical mobile suit customisation. The Tokyo Game Show demo used preset assemblies, so the full range of options was not available to test. Even so, the customisation system could provide meaningful depth for mech fans who enjoy tuning their machines.
Its movement-heavy design may appeal to players comparing home action games with the immediacy of an arcade machine. Those considering a home setup can also consult RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide before choosing a cabinet.
Release platforms and date
Bandai Namco has announced Gundam Rogue Orbit for 5 March 2027. It is in development for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

The game’s combination of accessible controls, dramatic attacks and a fresh setting gives it a clear opportunity to reach beyond established Gundam fans. Whether its customisation and combat systems can sustain a full release remains to be seen, but the early build delivered a confident, highly mobile style of mech action.
