Far Cry is moving to television, with FX and Ubisoft developing an anthology series based on the long-running game franchise. The latest casting announcement adds five performers to a project that already includes Steve Buscemi.
The new cast members are Brendan Gleeson, known for The Banshees of Inisherin and In Bruges; Hamish Linklater from Widow’s Bay; Jennifer Jason Leigh of The Hateful Eight; Sam Spruell from FX’s Alien: Earth; and Jamie Demetriou, whose credits include Fleabag and The Roses. The casting update was reported by Variety.
Gleeson, Linklater, Leigh, Spruell and Demetriou will join Buscemi, as well as previously announced actors Rob McElhenney and Lizzy Caplan. McElhenney is credited as Rob Mac and will also co-create the series with Noah Hawley. Hawley’s FX credits include Legion, Fargo and Alien: Earth.
What will the Far Cry TV series be about?
The production is based on Ubisoft’s Far Cry games, a series that began in 2004. No official story details have been released, so it remains unknown whether the show will adapt a particular game or introduce an original narrative within the franchise.
FX and Ubisoft are planning an anthology structure, with each season expected to tell a different story and feature a different cast. The companies hope the series will continue for multiple seasons, although no release information has been announced.
Game adaptations remain a regular part of the wider entertainment conversation. RETROCADE’s arcade blog follows gaming and industry news, while its arcade videos offer more gaming-related viewing.
Far Cry’s previous screen adaptations
The franchise has already appeared on screen. A Far Cry direct-to-video film was released in 2008. Netflix later released the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023, drawing inspiration from Blood Dragon, the standalone Far Cry 3 downloadable content.
Ubisoft has also attempted other game-to-film adaptations. The company’s Assassin’s Creed film was released in 2016 and starred Michael Fassbender. The new Far Cry project will use an anthology model if the current plans proceed.
