Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is expected to be one of the largest games in the series, with director Naoki Hamaguchi estimating a file size of about 200GB. That scale is also shaping how the game will be sold physically.

A demo shown at Gamescom included every location featured in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, along with additional areas. The scope of that content helps explain why the next instalment is placing such heavy demands on storage.
Hamaguchi discussed the project’s size in an interview with VGC. The 200GB figure is still an estimate because Square Enix continues to develop the game, so the final installation could be larger.
Why the physical edition still needs a download

Current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X discs hold roughly 100GB of data. Even using two discs would therefore not necessarily allow Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to run entirely from physical media.
As a result, the physical edition will contain one disc carrying only part of the game. Players will need to download the remaining files before they can play. For Australian collectors who value boxed releases, this means the disc will be a physical access point rather than a complete offline copy.
Hamaguchi recognises that some players may be disappointed. However, he still wanted the game to receive a physical release as the industry moves towards an increasingly digital future, particularly on PlayStation, where discs are becoming less central.
A required download could deliver launch fixes
There is one practical benefit to the arrangement: the download can include fixes prepared for launch. Players may receive day-one patches or hotfixes as part of the installation, helping them start with the most up-to-date version of the game.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch on 8 April 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC. For more gaming and hardware coverage, visit RETROCADE’s arcade blog, browse the latest arcade machines, or use the arcade machine buying guide when planning a home setup.
