Netflix has unveiled the first official look at Daniel Craig in its upcoming Chronicles of Narnia reboot. Craig plays Andrew Ketterley, the magician whose actions help set the wider story in motion.

The image, first published by UK’s Empire magazine, shows Craig in period clothing and a work apron, surrounded by lenses and dramatic beams of refracted light. The setting gives him the appearance of an eccentric older inventor, although Ketterley is considerably more dangerous than that impression suggests.

Craig has described Ketterley as a man whose ambitions can overwhelm his judgement. He said he would like to believe the character has good intentions, but is not convinced that he does. Ketterley becomes so absorbed by what might be possible that he fails to consider the people around him or the consequences of his experiments.

“He’s the stupidest magician in the world who actually made magic,” director Greta Gerwig said.

Netflix is changing the order of the Narnia stories

The new film will take a different route through C.S. Lewis’s seven-book series than the earlier Walden Media adaptations. Those films followed the order in which Lewis originally wrote the first three books, while Netflix plans to adapt the novels chronologically within the fictional timeline.

That approach makes The Magician’s Nephew the starting point for the new film series. Although it is the first story in the planned adaptation order, it was actually the second-last Narnia novel Lewis wrote.

Craig leads a cast that includes Meryl Streep as Aslan, David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan and Ciarán Hinds. The supporting performers are associated with projects including Lord of the Flies, The Phoenician Scheme, Sex Education, Emily, Game of Thrones and Silence.

Greta Gerwig aims for a large-scale fantasy spectacle

Gerwig is directing, writing and co-producing the film after making Lady Bird, Little Women and Barbie. She has described her ambition as a “rock opera” that feels “big and transporting”, suggesting a substantial visual and musical approach to Lewis’s fantasy world.

Netflix will give the film its first-ever wide theatrical release on 12 February 2027. An Australian streaming date was not provided in the supplied details; the announced Netflix streaming date is 2 April 2027.
