Spoiler warning: This article discusses the ending, post-credits scenes and optional content in Marvel’s Wolverine.

Marvel’s Wolverine closes Logan’s story with more questions than answers. Its main campaign deals with Nathaniel Essex, Master Mold and the origins of Mister Sinister, but the finale shifts attention towards Apocalypse and the future of Insomniac’s Marvel universe.

Jean Grey, Phoenix and Apocalypse

After Wolverine defeats Nathaniel Essex and Master Mold, the enormous Sentinel threatening Tokyo while searching for dormant mutants, Jean Grey becomes Phoenix. She addresses Apocalypse directly and asks whether he remembers her.

The story then moves to a farm, where Jean speaks with Logan about their shared past. Callisto asks whether Jean intends to pursue Sabretooth, Wolverine’s former friend and enemy. Jean refuses, suggesting that Sabretooth will appear if he survived.

Jean also hints that her relationship with Logan is far older and more complicated than the main story initially suggests. When Callisto asks whether she is all right, Jean replies: “You don’t understand how many times I’ve done this with him.”

Logan admits that he still cannot remember his earlier life. He says Jean and her allies will do a great deal of good, but Jean is more concerned about the mutants yet to awaken in a world that may hate them for circumstances beyond their control.

Logan explains that he must leave to discover who he once was. He begins to mention Apocalypse, making his next objective clear: he intends to find the ancient mutant and uncover the truth about his past. Jean, meanwhile, agrees to help Callisto, raising the possibility of a future story led by Jean Grey.

Sabretooth becomes Apocalypse’s next threat

The first post-credits scene confirms that Sabretooth survived being impaled on a food vendor’s cart. Victor Creed enters a dusty crypt while Apocalypse speaks inside his mind.

There, Sabretooth discovers another Helix Engine. A dark figure with glowing blue eyes watches him as Apocalypse declares that the pieces are in position and that the time for War has arrived.

That scene connects with Logan’s own history. During the game, Wolverine learns that he was once Death, one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, before Jean Grey—and potentially Nathaniel Essex—helped free him from that role. The ending strongly suggests that Sabretooth is now being prepared to become War.

A secret playable scene adds more history

Players who complete every optional nightmare trial and earn at least a bronze ranking in each unlock a second post-credits sequence. Unlike the other cinematic scenes, this is a short playable mission called Home.

Logan walks through the countryside near the Canadian farm he shares with Jean while she explains more about their past. The mission does not reveal much about a sequel, but it gives additional context to the bond between the two characters.

What this means for a future X-Men game

A major internal leak in 2023 indicated that Insomniac had planned a new X-Men game, with a reported release window of autumn 2030. The same leak associated Marvel’s Venom with a 2025 launch, and that project did not arrive then, so the leaked timing should not be treated as confirmed.

If the X-Men project remains active, the Apocalypse storyline established in Marvel’s Wolverine provides an obvious foundation. Logan’s search, Jean’s new responsibility, Sabretooth’s possible transformation and Apocalypse’s plans all leave room for a sequel, a spin-off or downloadable content.

The direction also gives Marvel fans plenty to examine, from Bolivar Trask and Nathaniel Essex to Omega Red, Master Mold and the wider mutant conflict. Why the ending matters

Marvel’s Wolverine does more than conclude Logan’s immediate adventure. Its final scenes position Apocalypse as a long-term threat, reframe Sabretooth as a potential Horseman and leave Jean Grey with a mission of her own. Whether those threads continue in an X-Men game remains unconfirmed, but the setup is unmistakable.

For Australian arcade enthusiasts looking to complement superhero gaming with a compact setup, bartop arcades offer a smaller footprint, while a custom project can start with DIY arcade kits.
