BlizzCon 2026 concluded on Sunday without confirming when Blizzard’s next major fan convention will take place. At the closing ceremony, Blizzard president Johanna Faries thanked attendees and said the company had “so much more in store”, ending with a reference to “next BlizzCon” but no date or year.
Blizzard had not provided a clear answer by Tuesday when asked whether the event would return in 2027. That uncertainty is notable because the company traditionally offered at least a broad indication of its plans, even when the precise dates were not announced until later.

A long-running annual tradition has already changed
From 2005 through 2019, BlizzCon was held almost every year. The exceptions were 2006 and 2012. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented an in-person event in 2020, while the 2021 edition was held entirely online.
Blizzard then skipped 2022 amid the company’s major harassment scandal and related lawsuit. The convention returned as an in-person event in 2023, prompting expectations that it would resume its former annual rhythm. Instead, Blizzard also missed 2024 and 2025, during a period that followed Microsoft’s acquisition of the company, before staging a major return in 2026.
That history means BlizzCon has not operated as an annual event for seven years. Earlier interruptions had clear explanations, but the absence of a “see you next year” message in 2026 suggests that the era of a reliably yearly convention may have ended.
Why a yearly convention is harder to sustain
The change is understandable in an industry where fewer publishers hold large annual events. QuakeCon and Tennocon remain examples, but maintaining a yearly show demands a steady pipeline of announcements, demonstrations and updates capable of filling a keynote and bringing thousands of fans together.
Blizzard also faces uncertainty around Xbox, while modern games are taking longer to develop. That makes it difficult to guarantee a substantial new line-up every year. It may help explain why Blizzard showcased Diablo 5 and StarCraft so prominently in 2026: the company may not have another comparable opportunity before those projects are close to release.
For readers following the wider arcade and gaming news, the situation reflects a broader shift away from predictable annual showcases. Large events now need to be timed around development milestones rather than a fixed calendar.
When will the next BlizzCon happen?
For now, the answer is simply unknown. Blizzard’s next event appears likely to happen when the company believes it is ready, echoing its familiar approach to announcing games, even as it has offered confident release windows for Diablo 5 and StarCraft several years in advance.
By the time the next BlizzCon arrives, Xbox, Blizzard and their games could look very different. Until then, fans will need to wait for a formal announcement rather than assume that the convention will return in 2027.
