World of Warcraft Forever is designed as a new take on Blizzard’s long-running MMO, using the foundations of the 2004–2006 game while moving beyond a simple return to the past. Unlike WoW Classic, it is intended to be a “Classic Plus” experience with fresh content and carefully chosen modern features.

The project adds new zones, quests, dungeons and a playable race. It also introduces quality-of-life changes, visual upgrades and several major design decisions that could make it easier for new, casual and returning players to understand. That is notable because much of the game still retains the slower, more demanding structure of old-school WoW.

For players who enjoy exploring the wider arcade and gaming news landscape, Forever is an interesting example of a modern release using older design principles rather than simply reproducing them.

1. Native controller support

Forever will be the first version of WoW to receive official controller support. While accessibility options and community-made controller tools have existed for years, this version will offer plug-and-play gamepad controls and a user interface tested and refined by Blizzard’s developers.

The change expands where the game can be played. A player could use a controller from the sofa or on a PC handheld instead of being tied to a desk and mouse-and-keyboard controls. It may also help younger or less experienced players who find traditional PC controls difficult to learn.

2. Realm-free multiplayer

Server selection has long been one of WoW’s barriers to playing with friends. In the standard game, a character’s realm determines much of the player community encountered in the world, even though later changes have loosened some of those limits.

Forever removes that structure. Blizzard describes it as “realm free”, with players separated by playstyle rather than individual servers. The planned categories are Normal, PvP and Roleplay, with a Hardcore permadeath mode planned for the future.

Players should continue seeing familiar people to support a sense of community, while the larger barriers to joining friends are removed. The original division between Horde and Alliance will return, preserving one of the game’s defining sources of faction identity.

3. A permanent level cap and horizontal expansion

Forever’s central design decision is a level cap that will remain at 60. Instead of repeatedly raising the ceiling, Blizzard plans to expand the game horizontally, adding content across existing level ranges rather than pushing everyone towards another maximum level.

This approach could reduce the anxiety that often faces players returning to a live-service MMO after a long absence. Modern WoW has accumulated numerous versions, systems and catch-up features, making the game difficult to parse. Forever is intended to remain a consistent experience rather than becoming another stack of competing eras.

4. Making a 20-year-old game less solved

Although much of Forever will be recognisable, Blizzard says it wants to “unsolve” the game. That means adding content that players have not already mapped out completely, while changing familiar systems enough to encourage discovery.

Classes will be redesigned, loot tables refreshed, and itemisation and stat bonuses reconsidered. The goal is to create new builds and combinations instead of allowing every player to follow a fully optimised path from day one.

Whether that sense of uncertainty lasts remains to be seen, but the launch should offer a genuinely new starting point even for players who know the original game inside out.

5. Classic art with modern rendering

Forever keeps the original low-poly art assets but updates the technology behind them. Lighting, fog and water are being substantially improved, creating a richer atmosphere without replacing the visual identity of the original game.

Players will be able to switch between the classic low-poly “SD” character models and more detailed “HD” versions. The HD models retain the animation routines of the classic game, helping them fit naturally into the older art style.

The result aims to sit between a retro release and a modern remaster. It preserves the distinctive look of early WoW while offering more visual atmosphere than the stark presentation of WoW Classic.

6. A slower game with less pressure

Forever will not necessarily be easier. Combat, travel and levelling are slower, dungeon groups will not use modern matchmaking, and many systems remain deliberately opaque. Those qualities may frustrate players who expect the convenience of contemporary MMOs.

However, the slower pace could also make the experience feel less crowded and demanding. The world is harsher, but its simpler structure may be easier to inhabit without constantly worrying about the latest expansion, optimal build or catch-up route.

Blizzard has presented the game as a return to the idea that the journey matters more than the destination. That philosophy is increasingly unusual in live-service games, which have spent two decades adding layers of progression and endgame systems.

For anyone comparing the space-saving appeal of a compact bartop arcade with a large modern gaming setup, Forever’s controller support could also make PC gaming more comfortable in shared living spaces.
