Marvel’s Wolverine has officially launched, arriving five days after reviews raised concerns about its reception. Critics have described the otherwise competent game as dated, heavily linear and reluctant to take risks. One particularly frequent complaint concerns how strongly it guides players through Wolverine’s scent-tracking abilities.
Those concerns are now attracting attention from developer Insomniac. A teasing message from the studio’s marketing director suggests that some of the feedback gathered since reviews went live may soon lead to changes.
The scent trails became a major criticism
Marvel’s Wolverine already presents a tightly controlled, closed-world adventure. However, its scent-tracking sections add another layer of direction: prominent blue particle trails show players exactly where to go when searching for an objective.
For reviewers, the effect was less like discovering a trail and more like following a highly visible route marker. That left little room for observation or exploration, prompting debate over whether the feature was an accessibility option that could be disabled.
Players eventually found that the scent effects could not simply be switched off. The issue became part of a wider discussion about whether the game simplifies its challenges too aggressively, especially compared with Insomniac’s earlier Spider-Man titles.
“i don’t think you can turn off the Wolverine fart gas. this is after today’s update. i’m at the same spot where Skillup follows Jean Grey’s fart gas and you can see her fart gas in the background of the menu where those options are turned off, but Jean’s fart gas particles stay”

Insomniac hints at a response
James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of marketing, posted that the team had been listening closely and had been working in response to the feedback received over the previous few days.
“We have been 100% listening over the last few days and the team has been cooking hard today in response to some of the feedback – in case you were wondering what that smell out of our kitchen was 😉”

The reference to a smell appears to point directly at the much-discussed scent particles. It is not confirmation of a specific fix, but the wording has given players reason to believe the visual trails—or another related concern—could be addressed soon after launch.

There is an uncomfortable timing issue here. If a substantial patch is now being prepared, early buyers may feel they are testing a work in progress while Insomniac responds to criticism from the gaming press and players. For now, the developer has indicated that the feedback has been heard, but has not detailed what changes are coming or when they will arrive.
