PlayStation users unhappy with Sony’s growing focus on digital games organised a week-long boycott. Participants avoided digital purchases, the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus under the slogan “no disc, no buy”.

The protest arrived amid wider debate about game ownership and physical releases. Nintendo has highlighted physical game sales, while Xbox is developing a disc-to-digital programme. Sony, meanwhile, has promised to end disc production and has taken legal positions suggesting that digital purchases may provide limited ownership rights. The company is also facing a lawsuit alleging it attempted to establish a digital game monopoly.
Sony’s response to the backlash indicated that it does not believe the decline of physical media threatens its business. That stance encouraged some players to organise the boycott, although the campaign did not produce a measurable commercial or engagement impact.
The PlayStation boycott did not change player behaviour

Mat Piscatella, a video game industry adviser at Circana, shared player-engagement information on Bluesky. When a user asked whether the week of the PlayStation Blackout had affected the figures, Piscatella replied that his tracking showed no significant change at all in player count or engagement.
There was no significant change at all in player count or engagement in our tracking.

The result is not entirely unexpected. The protest may have attracted attention online, but its participating audience was not large enough to influence platform-wide measurements. Some players are unaware of the industry debate, while others do not consider the shift away from discs important enough to change their habits.
Timing also worked against the campaign. The boycott took place during the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta, giving PlayStation owners a strong reason to keep using their consoles and potentially limiting the protest’s reach.

What the result means for physical games
The figures do not settle the broader argument about whether physical games offer better consumer rights, preservation or resale options. They do show that this particular week-long action failed to reduce tracked PlayStation activity in a meaningful way.

For now, Sony appears committed to an all-digital direction. Vocal opposition to that strategy remains visible, but the boycott’s results suggest that the dissatisfied group does not yet have enough influence to force a change in the company’s approach.
