Critical Role Campaign 4 schedule breaks its usual pattern

4

Critical Role returned to its latest Campaign 4 arc on 27 August, bringing unsettling dreams, high-pressure combat and political manoeuvring. After three episodes, viewers are enjoying the campaign, but its unusual release order has created plenty of uncertainty.

The scheduling change is easier to understand once Campaign 4’s format is clear. Unlike earlier Exandria campaigns, it features 13 players, with Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan using a West Marches-style structure to manage the larger group.

How the Campaign 4 tables work

West Marches campaigns generally take place in a shared sandbox built around a central hub where characters can rest and regroup. Campaign 4 takes that approach further by avoiding one permanent party. Instead, the cast is divided between three tables:

  • Soldiers
  • Seekers
  • Schemers

The first arc usually stayed with each table for roughly four or five episodes before bringing the groups together in Dol-Makjar for the Convergence arc. When the tables separated again for the current arc, many viewers expected the same pattern: several Seekers episodes, followed by the Schemers and then the Soldiers.

Why the episode order is confusing viewers

That anticipated rotation has not happened. Episode 32 followed the Seekers, episode 33 switched to the Schemers, and episode 34 returned to the Seekers. Based on the earlier sequence, viewers could reasonably have expected episode 35 to focus on the Schemers as well. However, the published programming schedule indicates that the Seekers appear again.

The change may be deliberate rather than the result of cast availability. Moving between tables can allow the campaign to show consequences in a more effective order, particularly when one group’s decision directly affects another.

In episode 33, Off-Balance, viewers learned that members of the Revolutionary Council would travel to Dol-Makjar after Yanessa Halovar called for a vote of no confidence. Episode 34, Rock and Flame, then showed the Seekers blocking a road to delay House Tachonis from reaching Houndsport.

Showing the Seekers’ decision first lets viewers see the Schemers respond to its immediate consequences. That approach may be more satisfying than presenting the longer explanation first and revealing the practical impact later.

What happens next?

Critical Role

Although the narrative logic is understandable, switching between the Seekers and Schemers has left viewers unsure how the rest of the second arc will be arranged. Discussion has focused on whether the campaign will continue changing tables frequently or return to following one group at a time. Questions from viewers reflect that uncertainty.

A previous clarification from a Critical Role representative stated that there is no fixed number of episodes assigned to each table. For now, Australian viewers can consult the show’s current programming schedule to see which table is featured each Thursday.
