The Pokémon Trading Card Game’s 30th anniversary release is less than 24 hours away, but excitement has been overshadowed by steep retailer pricing, early product access and growing fears of missing out.
Dick’s Sporting Goods had appeared to offer collectors a calmer alternative after Walmart’s raffle system attracted attention. Instead, its app-only drawing has raised eyebrows by listing several products well above their manufacturer’s suggested retail prices.
Dick’s Pokémon 30th anniversary prices
The drawing remains open until 22 September 2026. Entrants need a Dick’s account, and winners are selected at random before being automatically charged when the entry period ends. Purchases are limited to one of each product per person.
That limit is more restrictive than Walmart’s system, which allows multiple units in a single purchase but can reduce the number of individual buyers who obtain the set. Dick’s advertised prices are:
- 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box: $120, compared with a $49.99 MSRP — a 140.05% markup.
- 30th Celebration Poster Collection: $40, compared with a $14.99 MSRP — a 166.84% markup.
- 30th Celebration Tech Sticker Collection: $40, compared with a $14.99 MSRP — a 166.84% markup.
- 30th Celebration Knock Out Collection: $25, compared with a $9.99 MSRP — a 150.25% markup.
- 30th Celebration ex Box: $60, compared with a $21.99 MSRP — a 172.85% markup.
Those prices are lower than GameStop’s reported $169.99 listing for the $49.99 Elite Trainer Box, but that comparison offers little comfort to collectors. A recent collector discussion shows how sharply retailer pricing has escalated.
With collectors reportedly placing lawn chairs outside shops days before launch, the pressure to buy immediately is intense. Availability will vary by retailer and region, yet the available signs point towards The Pokémon Company pursuing a large print run. Early reports also indicate that most hits may be relatively easy to find, with the ultra-rare RGB Mew and Mewtwo cards expected to be the major exceptions.
Early access adds to the frustration
The pricing controversy is only one part of the release-day problem. Rip-and-ship personalities and scalpers appear to have obtained stock weeks ahead of the public launch. Some online creators have even opened the Ultra Premium Collection, despite that product not being scheduled for release until November 2026.
Premature listings have also distorted the secondary market. Cards described as common have been offered for dozens of dollars more than their expected value on early marketplace listings. Inflated launch prices are familiar with new trading-card releases, but the effect appears especially pronounced for this anniversary set.
Rumours have suggested that some early stock may have been stolen. In response, eBay has halted early sales of Pokémon products on its platform for the first time.
How to enter the Dick’s drawing
Collectors who still want to enter need to use the Dick’s Sporting Goods app and create an account. The 30th anniversary Pokémon promotion appears as a widget on the app’s main page. The official app is available through Apple’s App Store.
For Australian buyers, the US retailer’s drawing is not a straightforward local purchasing option. It is also worth remembering that the current rush may not reflect long-term scarcity. Waiting for wider release information and comparing prices can be more sensible than paying inflated amounts simply to secure products before launch.
