God of War Laufey arrives on PlayStation 5 on 16 February 2027, but its challenge begins well before launch. Following the uneven reception to Marvel’s Wolverine, Sony’s next major first-party release will face intense scrutiny over its design, direction and place in the company’s blockbuster strategy.

A difficult moment for Sony

Marvel’s Wolverine took five years to reach PS5 after its announcement. Instead of becoming an uncomplicated celebration, its launch was met by mixed reviews, loud online criticism and frustration surrounding several unpopular business decisions.

The timing has made the situation more awkward for Sony. The company is also dealing with an optics problem after announcing plans to end physical disc production in 2028. At the same time, it needs to regain confidence in its PlayStation strategy after years of uncertainty.

That places additional weight on God of War Laufey, which is expected to become Sony’s next major showcase. Readers following the wider arcade and gaming news landscape will recognise the broader industry issue: large, expensive releases are increasingly expected to justify an entire platform strategy.

What makes Laufey a high-stakes release?

On paper, the game is not a dramatic gamble. Santa Monica Studio is pursuing the cinematic action-adventure format that has helped define PlayStation across several console generations. Given the previous critical and commercial success of the God of War series, the game would normally enter 2027 as an obvious contender for major awards.

Instead, it will launch with a target on its back. Marvel’s Wolverine became the first Sony game released after the physical-games announcement, making it a convenient focus for online anger. Trailers and social posts attracted comments from players using the game to protest against PlayStation’s wider direction.

The new God of War will also face culture-war commentary because it stars Laufey, making it the first game in the series led by a female character rather than Kratos. That backlash has already started. However, there is little evidence that this kind of online noise directly determines sales.

The real question is whether the formula still works

The more important issue is whether audiences still want Sony’s familiar brand of premium, cinematic single-player game. Critics have argued that Marvel’s Wolverine relies too heavily on established design habits: spectacular quick-time events with limited consequences, slow walk-and-talk sections for delivering emotional scenes, and scent trails that guide players towards objectives and collectibles.

These features are recognisable because Sony has used them successfully before. The Last of Us Part 2, God of War from 2018 and Marvel’s Spider-Man all turned a similar emphasis on cinematic immersion into critical acclaim and strong sales.

For some players, however, Wolverine may represent a tipping point. If they are already tired of this style, a less successful example can appear to confirm that the entire formula has become stale.

Laufey appears to share Wolverine’s DNA

The available footage suggests that God of War Laufey is built from many of the same ingredients. Its 25-minute gameplay reveal combined cinematic cutscenes with high-intensity action, presenting the polished blockbuster experience associated with PlayStation’s biggest releases.

That makes the game an easy target for anyone arguing that modern big-budget games have become too predictable. Santa Monica Studio will need to show that Marvel’s Wolverine was an underdeveloped example of the formula, rather than proof that the entire approach has stopped working.

There is an important distinction here. The criticism of Wolverine is not necessarily caused by its use of cinematic conventions. Scent trails, for example, are not automatically a serious design flaw. More substantial concerns include shallow combat, limited depth across roughly 15 hours of fighting and repeated encounters with the same enemy types.

It may be tempting to combine those complaints into a larger argument that Sony’s design philosophy is outdated. A simpler explanation is that Wolverine was not designed as effectively as some of its peers. Laufey will have to answer that criticism through execution, not just presentation.

A wider opportunity for PlayStation

Sony needs a dependable hit at the beginning of 2027 if it wants to regain control of a narrative that became increasingly difficult during 2026. Another perceived miss would invite even more scrutiny of the company’s signature blockbuster model.

That scrutiny could ultimately be useful. The award-winning 2024 release Astro Bot showed that PS5 owners are interested in a broader range of single-player experiences. Sony may benefit from taking more creative risks and moving beyond its largest cinematic productions.

For God of War Laufey, though, this is an inconvenient time to carry that debate. The game must satisfy existing fans, establish Laufey as a compelling lead and demonstrate that Sony’s premium action-adventure formula still has room to evolve.
