Stephen Root has officially confirmed that he appears in Grand Theft Auto VI, after his distinctive voice was heard in footage released through a Netflix special.
During a brief interview with the Associated Press, Root was asked directly whether he would appear in the game, which is scheduled for release on November 19. His answer was short but clear: “Yeeaahhh, you’re gonna see me in that.”
The casting may not come as a major surprise to anyone familiar with Root’s voice work. Players had already begun identifying him from the footage, with his vocal style particularly recognisable from his role as Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill.
Root will play Brian Heder, a drug trafficker who has an important connection to the game’s protagonists and their story.
A familiar voice joins GTA 6
Root has worked across film and television for roughly four decades. His best-known roles include Milton in Office Space and appearances in 97 episodes of NewsRadio, alongside parts in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The West Wing, No Country for Old Men, True Blood, Justified, The Man in the High Castle, Barry and Widow’s Bay.
That screen work is only part of his résumé: Root has also contributed to a large number of animated productions and video games. His appearance in the released footage therefore felt familiar to many viewers well before the casting was formally confirmed.
With Root now attached to the project as Brian Heder, one of GTA 6’s recognisable performances has been identified. The game is set to launch at midnight on November 19, based on the local time where players live.
