GTA 6 could transform car theft into a deeper gameplay system

Stealing cars has always been central to Grand Theft Auto, but GTA 6 appears ready to make the process far more involved. Instead of treating every vehicle like a disposable getaway ride, Rockstar’s next open-world crime game could turn each theft into a decision about security, risk and potential value.

A second viewing of Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look, which premiered on Netflix on 27 August, highlights how quickly the game introduces this idea. Following the opening drug deal that goes wrong, Jason steals an orange-red American car with a black vinyl roof, seemingly inspired by a late-1970s or early-1980s model.

The sequence shows two possible approaches. Jason can smash the window, or use a slim jim to lower it slightly and release the lock without breaking the glass. The quieter method takes longer and demands more precise controller inputs, but should attract less attention.

Car theft is no longer a one-button action

In GTA 5, taking a vehicle was comparatively straightforward. Players could pull a driver from a car, threaten them with a weapon or break into a parked vehicle with a quick strike. GTA 6 appears to replace that streamlined approach with a system that asks players to consider how a vehicle is protected before making a move.

The game is expected to use several levels of vehicle security. More expensive cars with more advanced technology will require particular tools or techniques, giving players a reason to weigh up which target is worth the effort and when the risk is acceptable.

Jason and Lucia will also have access to a device called a “wank scanner”. It can reveal information about a car’s security system and its value, making it useful for identifying worthwhile targets before the theft begins.

Electronic keys, trackers and stolen-car fences

The full range of security types has not been revealed, but some vehicles will use electronic keys that must be digitally cloned. Others may contain electronic tracking devices capable of alerting law enforcement if the stolen car falls below a certain speed. That could make maintaining high speed essential during a getaway.

There is also a major change after the theft: stolen cars can be sold. GTA 6 will include a fence system for stolen goods, apparently closer to the model used in 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2. Car theft therefore looks set to become more than a way to find transport; it may also support a profitable side business.

That attention to driving and vehicle choice should appeal to players who enjoy the physical feel of arcade racing. For a different kind of car-focused experience, explore RETROCADE’s racing simulators or browse the arcade machine buying guide.

Unexpected discoveries inside stolen vehicles

One memorable moment in the preview shows Lucia finding an influencer in the boot of a car she has just taken. This suggests that vehicles may contain surprising situations rather than serving only as static objects waiting to be driven away.

That possibility leaves plenty of room for unusual encounters: a briefcase filled with drugs, a back seat packed with birthday balloons or a sleeping passenger could all turn an ordinary theft into a more complicated scenario. An angry crocodile would be an especially memorable surprise, although there is no confirmation that one appears in the game.

Rockstar has not announced every detail of the theft system, so the eventual variety of security measures and vehicle events remains unknown. What is clear from the footage is that car theft is being presented as a more deliberate activity than it was in earlier entries.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on 19 November.
