Hearthstone is set to receive its first new class in four years, with the Monk scheduled to arrive in March next year. Blizzard revealed the class alongside a new expansion, Reign of the Black Empire, which launches on October 20.
Reign of the Black Empire reaches into Warcraft’s ancient past
The expansion is built around the Old Gods and takes place tens of thousands of years before the events of the modern Warcraft era. Its story centres on the conflict between the Old Gods and the Titans, while also appearing closely connected to the current narrative of World of Warcraft.

Assemble introduces new deck-building possibilities
Reign of the Black Empire adds a new keyword called Assemble. This ability combines the text boxes of two separate minions, creating opportunities for unusual and potentially powerful card combinations.
The expansion also adds Apparitions as a new minion type in Battlegrounds. Each time one of your Apparitions is destroyed, you move closer to awakening a powerful Old God that will join the fight on your behalf.
The Journey expands Hearthstone’s Journal
Another addition is The Journey, a new section of the Journal designed to act as a central hub for game events, narrative moments, stories and new game modes. The Journey will be available to every player at no extra cost when the expansion launches on October 20.
The Monk arrives in March
Blizzard shared few details about the Monk during the announcement. The new class is planned for March next year, with additional information due to be revealed in later BlizzCon panels.
