The Vermilion Mask Chooses Clear, Classic Anime Action

The Vermilion Mask is Crunchyroll’s upcoming action anime, premiering in October. Directed by Tetsuaki Watanabe, the first-season director of Blue Lock, it embraces a deliberately straightforward style inspired by anime from the 1990s and early 2000s.

Its world revolves around supernatural masks. The Mask of the War God, Spider Mask, Chameleon Mask, Cat Mask and Warrior Mask each provide a different ability. Some work like playful power-ups, while others carry enough power to cause catastrophic harm.

The story follows Peru d’Arrest, an apprentice mask maker travelling across the world to destroy the masks created by his former master. The series promises large-scale battles, dangerous villains and an exceptionally oversized sword.

Despite that crowded premise, Watanabe says the show is designed to remain easy to understand. He argues that elaborate modern action direction can sometimes make it difficult for viewers to identify what is happening, so his team chose a more classic approach with clear staging and readable movement.

That decision is evident from the opening episode. In under 21 minutes, it introduces Peru, the mask system, political conflict and his central mission while still making room for substantial action. Characters may move at extraordinary speed and unleash supernatural attacks, but their positions, goals and relationships remain understandable.

Why clear action matters in The Vermilion Mask

The series combines contemporary animation with the visual and directorial sensibilities Watanabe associates with older anime. His aim is to make the show accessible to children and adults alike, rather than reserving its action language for viewers who can decode highly stylised direction.

The masks are made distinct through animation, colour, music and sound design. Their simple, hand-carved theatrical appearances do not necessarily reveal their powers. Peru carries several in a large backpack, selecting one when circumstances demand it and transforming parts of his body when he puts it on.

Peru is a craftsman first and a conventional hero second. He trained under Gaston Lou, one of the world’s three great mask makers. The sentient Mask of the War God once possessed Peru, leading him to kill Lou and his fellow apprentices. His quest to destroy every mask his master created is therefore driven by guilt as much as duty.

Watanabe structures the series around Peru’s perspective so viewers can understand his remorse while also enjoying the ingenuity of his fighting style. Peru’s appeal comes from watching a skilled mask maker improvise with different abilities when he is trapped in a dangerous situation.

The masks also carry personal costs. Some give users the power they want, while others impose abilities they cannot control or remove. Peru’s eventual companion Mok is permanently fused with the Mask of Smoke. Although its power is useful, Mok is desperate to escape the burden of wearing it.

An unusual manga adaptation with room to grow

Written by Dr. Poro and illustrated by Nabana Naba, The Vermilion Mask has run in Young King OURs since 2021. The publication sits outside Japan’s three major manga magazines: Weekly Shonen Jump, Weekly Shonen Magazine and Weekly Shonen Sunday.

Watanabe says the manga’s relative obscurity helped attract him to the project. He sees it as more than a straightforward superpower contest, pointing to its unpredictable story, distinctive mask concept, unusual setting and large cast of compelling characters.

The director believes those qualities allow the series to stand beside titles from the biggest manga magazines without being outmatched. At the same time, a lower profile means the adaptation carries fewer pre-release expectations. In his view, that gives it plenty of opportunity to surprise viewers.

Watanabe’s experience on Blue Lock also informs the project. The football anime focuses on each player’s priorities and the split-second decisions behind every play. He sees the same emphasis on character convictions in The Vermilion Mask: understanding what a character believes is central to making that character engaging.

A retro approach for a new audience

The combination of defined characters, strange supernatural abilities and carefully staged combat makes The Vermilion Mask a notable addition to Crunchyroll’s October line-up. Its older-inspired direction is not intended to make the show look dated. Instead, younger viewers may experience the style as something fresh, while older viewers may recognise a touch of nostalgia.
