Marvel’s Wolverine has arrived to a noticeably muted critical response, despite coming from Insomniac Games, the studio behind several of Sony’s most highly regarded recent releases. Reviewers have not broadly dismissed it as a failure, but many have described it as merely competent.

That reaction is enough to place the X-Men action game at the bottom of the PlayStation Studios rankings for the PS5 era, which began with the console’s launch in 2020.

A respectable score with limited enthusiasm

With a Metascore of 77, Marvel’s Wolverine is hardly a critical disaster. The number points to a solid adventure that may struggle to feel essential, particularly beside the standard set by Sony’s first-party catalogue.

A common criticism is that the game’s linear, third-person action design feels old-fashioned. Rather than presenting a major evolution of the formula established by earlier blockbusters, it has left some reviewers feeling that they are playing a polished version of a style associated with the early 2000s.

That distinction matters when a new release carries a $70 price tag. A game can be enjoyable and still seem difficult to justify at launch if its ideas feel familiar. For players who were anticipating another ambitious project from the team behind Spider-Man, waiting for a price drop may be the more appealing option.

Why the review scores vary

The overall score also hides a significant divide between outlets. A number of smaller international publications awarded Wolverine scores of 9 or 10, while several larger publications landed around 6.

Giant Bomb recorded the lowest result among the outlets highlighted, with a 5. Metacritic’s weighting system gives greater influence to publications it considers more established, so a large collection of high scores from lesser-known sites does not affect the average equally.

Where it sits among Sony’s PS5 releases

At the time of writing, 106 PS5 reviews were listed, showing that the game has attracted a wide range of opinions. Players who connect with its story and combat may consider the score irrelevant, but its position in Sony’s internal rankings remains notable.

Marvel’s Wolverine currently sits below every other in-house Sony production released during the PS5 generation. At the opposite end, God of War: Ragnarok leads with a 94. The 2020 launch title Sackboy: A Big Adventure holds a 79, meaning it is no longer at the bottom.

A weak point by Sony’s unusually high standards

The broader takeaway is less damaging to Sony than the headline suggests. If a respectable, polished and ultimately non-essential superhero game represents the company’s lowest-rated PS5 first-party release, the performance of its studios has been remarkably strong.

For Australian players deciding where to spend their gaming budget, the reviews make Wolverine look more like a wait-for-a-discount purchase than an urgent day-one buy.
