Playing Dragon Age: Origins on PC in 2026 can still mean dealing with bugs and crashes. Seventeen years after release, the influential western RPG has never received the official modern overhaul many players expected.
A six-person fan team may now provide the most credible route towards a better version. The developers are decompiling Dragon Age: Origins’ source code, working towards a result that should come as close as possible to the original codebase without official access.
The project was first highlighted by PCGamesN and is approximately 60 percent complete after three years of work. Shot_Let_1344, one of the developers involved, estimated that reaching 90 percent could take another year.
Why an official remaster looks unlikely
An official remaster could give Electronic Arts a way to revisit a much-loved role-playing game, particularly as the company deals with $20 billion in debt following its completed acquisition deal. Several obstacles, however, make that outcome increasingly difficult.
EA may have little appetite for returning to Origins after Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet the company’s expectations. More importantly, BioWare no longer appears to retain the same depth of technical knowledge surrounding the game’s in-house engine.
In a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Veilguard creative director and longtime BioWare developer Jon Epler said few people at the studio still understood how the Origins engine worked. He described a remaster as something that would not be as straightforward as the Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
BioWare has since been reduced further, with its remaining developers concentrating on the next Mass Effect project. That leaves fan-led technical work as the clearest practical hope for improving access to one of the most important western RPGs of its era. What the decompiled code could make possible
Shot_Let_1344 said on Reddit that completing the project could enable much more substantial changes than conventional bug fixes.
“We can update the code to be in-line with modern programming standards. We can add support for co-operative play by doing things like creating individual inventories/loot, removing the pause feature. We could add split screen play. We could go as far as making a mobile compatible version. With access to the source the possibilities are limitless for how we can change the game.”
Those possibilities include separate inventories and loot for cooperative play, removing the pause feature, split-screen support and a mobile-compatible version. None of these additions is guaranteed, but source access could give the community substantially more control than conventional modding permits.
The project also reflects the appeal of hands-on enthusiast development, much like the community work involved in DIY arcade kits and custom gaming hardware. In both cases, technical knowledge can extend the life of older experiences beyond what official support provides.
Until an official remaster becomes more plausible, this painstaking decompilation effort may be the closest Dragon Age: Origins gets to a technical revival.
