Civilization 7 is set to receive its largest free update so far, with Firaxis Games preparing to add the long-requested Atomic Age to its 4X strategy game.

Revealed during Firaxis’ developer panel at PAX West 2026, Arc of Tomorrow is planned for 2027, approximately two years after Civilization 7 launched. The update is intended to extend the historical timeline into the 1950s–2050s, while addressing one of the most frequently requested omissions from the game.

Creative director Ed Beach described the period as a particularly compelling subject for the series. In a wrote post on Steam, he highlighted the era’s proxy conflicts, nuclear tension, rapid technological progress, spaceflight and movements for justice and equality.

Firaxis stressed that the expansion remains in early development, so individual features may change before release. The current outline includes the following:

What Arc of Tomorrow will add

  • The Atomic Age: A fourth playable Age covering the period from the 1950s through to the 2050s, with era-specific gameplay, Buildings, Units, visual design and other content.
  • Expanded nuclear gameplay: New offensive and defensive options, additional Units and a fresh twist on the concept of mutually assured destruction.
  • Multilateral Agreements: Leaders will be able to respond collectively to developing situations, including rising nuclear stockpiles, through calls for disarmament or escalation.
  • New empire-management tools: Players will be able to transform their own Settlements into City-States. This offers more control over the Settlement Limit while creating additional ways to use enhanced City-State abilities.
  • Enhanced City-State interactions and Proxy Warfare: Players can direct resources towards smaller conflicts involving City-States rather than immediately committing to a full empire-versus-empire war.
  • Great Works of Film: Film Crews will search for locations suited to particular genres. The quality of the finished production will determine its benefits.
  • Manufactured Goods: Recipes will combine selected commodities into new resources, including powerful materials such as Enriched Uranium.
  • New civilizations and leaders: Firaxis has confirmed more additions, with further details to come.

Earthrise will be the first paid expansion

Firaxis also announced Civilization 7: Earthrise, the game’s first paid expansion. Its central theme is humanity’s push towards the stars, with space-based objectives planned for each Age and extraterrestrial expeditions eventually becoming possible.

The expansion is expected to introduce new Unit abilities, technologies, civil-engineering structures and additional content. However, the success of Earthrise will likely depend on whether Arc of Tomorrow can first address the concerns surrounding the base game.

A crucial update for Civilization 7

Released in February 2025, Civilization 7 has had an uneven post-launch period. Firaxis has continued issuing fixes and adding features, but the game has remained divisive among players, including long-time series fans.

Criticism has focused on the user interface and the perception that some systems feel less substantial than in earlier entries. The absence of the Atomic Age has also been a major complaint, making its implementation one of the clearest tests yet of Firaxis’ plans to improve the game.

In the meantime, Civilization 7 is free to play on Steam until September 10. Update 1.5.0 is also approaching, bringing changes to diplomacy and resource generation alongside new maps.
