Final Fantasy VII Remake established that Square Enix was doing more than rebuilding the 1997 PlayStation RPG with modern visuals. Alongside familiar story beats, it reworked important elements and introduced a self-aware layer designed to challenge long-held fan expectations.

That approach leaves the conclusion, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, facing a difficult balance. Will it closely honour the original ending, deliver a major surprise, or find a path between the two? Whatever the answer, the development team wants players to encounter it personally rather than rely on someone else to explain it first.

Game director Naoki Hamaguchi and battle director Teruki Endo discussed new gameplay features for the trilogy’s final instalment during a panel at PAX West 2026.

As reported by Polygon, the presentation closed with a message encouraging fans to experience the climax as something that belongs to them, rather than something explained by another person.

Hamaguchi expanded on that idea, focusing on the emotional journey built across all three games.

Rather than having the developers provide every answer at the end, we want players to discover those answers through their own experience. The reunions, relationships with companions and final resolution have all been building towards the third game. We hope players reach those moments with the journey and feelings they have developed along the way.

That wording may suggest an ending with room for interpretation, although it does not confirm that major questions will be left unresolved. The original Final Fantasy VII has been known for almost three decades, but the remake project has consistently created space for new possibilities alongside its familiar foundations.

Hamaguchi has previously expressed confidence in the result, saying he and the team were happy with how the story had turned out and eager to see how fans respond. He also confirmed that the trilogy’s ending was mapped out from the beginning, as told to VGC.

Could Advent Children connect to the remake trilogy?

The wider Final Fantasy VII universe includes the PlayStation 2 spin-off Dirge of Cerberus, the PSP prequel Crisis Core and the animated feature Advent Children. Some fans have wondered whether the new trilogy will bring those separate pieces into a more unified continuity.

Hamaguchi has not ruled out a relationship between the remake series and Advent Children. He has said that the film has been incorporated into the broader remake project, including its ending, while declining to confirm whether the conclusion directly leads into it. He made those comments in an interview with Automaton.

That wider scope aligns with one of Hamaguchi’s stated ambitions: passing Final Fantasy VII to a new generation. He has described the remake trilogy as an opportunity to expand the property’s future, rather than leaving it solely as a celebrated classic from the past.
