Onimusha: Way of the Sword has turned a strong launch into a major early success, rising from sixth place to the top-selling game on Steam within 24 hours of release.

Capcom’s return to its samurai action series is set in a reimagined Edo-period Kyoto. The game opened at No. 6 on Steam on Friday and reached 40,000 active players on its first day, competing for attention with the newly released The Blood of Dawnwalker. SteamDB recorded 40,000 active players during that opening day.

A rapid climb up Steam’s charts

The momentum continued through the weekend. One day after launch, Onimusha: Way of the Sword became the No. 1 selling game on Steam, moving ahead of Halloween: The Game and WARDOGS. Saturday brought a reported peak of 74,575 active players.

The release is particularly notable because it revives a Capcom series that has been absent from the mainline spotlight for two decades. The previous mainline entry, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, launched in 2006.

Strong reviews, with reservations about repetition

Player interest is matched by broadly favourable critical reception. At the time of writing, the game holds an 85 Metacritic score. However, several reviews identify repetition in the combat and mission structure as its main weakness.

Some criticism focuses on familiar boss encounters, routine fights and progression that does not always feel rewarding. The game’s approximately 25-hour length has also been questioned, with the argument that its strongest ideas might have worked better in a more focused 12-hour campaign. Repeated trips through earlier areas, rift-closing missions and side objectives add to that sense of padding.

A review from ScreenRant noted the repetitiveness of bosses and enemies, while still judging the overall experience a success. Its assessment was that dedicated action fans have plenty to enjoy, particularly when increasing the difficulty.

IGN’s Will Borger was more enthusiastic, highlighting the tension of sword clashes, split-second counters and the focused connection between player and protagonist Miyamoto Musashi. That praise points to the game’s central appeal: when its combat is working at full strength, each exchange becomes a test of timing and commitment.

Why the launch matters for arcade fans

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a console and PC release rather than a dedicated arcade title, but its emphasis on readable attacks, counters and dramatic close-range combat fits naturally alongside the design principles of classic action machines. Readers interested in building a games room can browse RETROCADE’s arcade news and features, compare options in the arcade machine buying guide or explore the available arcade machines.

For compact setups, bartop arcades can provide a smaller footprint, while hands-on builders may prefer DIY arcade kits. The broader point is the same: precise controls and repeatable challenge remain central to both modern action games and arcade play.
