Dreadline Express is a psychological horror adventure set aboard humanity’s last train, where grotesque creatures, fractured passengers and difficult choices create an unsettling journey.

A nightmare aboard the last human train

David Konecny’s debut game places you in the role of Samuel Mather, a passenger waking inside a train filled with ominous red light. Outside the window, writhing tentacles press against the glass as a stern announcement warns that movement through the carriages has been suspended.

The premise naturally recalls Snowpiercer: a dwindling human population living aboard one enormous train while travelling through a hostile world. Konecny says that comparison was not a direct influence, as he had not encountered Snowpiercer when development began. The resemblance is nevertheless clear, although the threat here is not an ice age. Lovecraft-inspired horrors have taken over the world beyond the train.

Dreadline Express on Steam combines its horror setting with a deliberately rough PSX-era visual style. The result is less about sudden scares and more about sustained discomfort, as the train’s passengers appear to be losing their grip on reality.

Cards turn investigation into a puzzle

Exploration is structured around cards representing clues, knowledge and useful discoveries. Talking to people and examining the train gradually unlocks new ways to approach situations, so the experience is not simply a linear ride towards one predetermined ending.

Konecny explained that many of the game’s puzzles support several solutions. One example involves Euler, a passenger found rocking in a corridor with his hands over his ears. He is being pushed towards madness by what he calls the “unbearable noise” of the “infernal machine”.

Earlier, Samuel has established that he is an apothecary after solving a combination lock on a case in his carriage. A card gained through conversation with Euler leads back to that case, where laudanum can be found. The medicine may ease Euler’s suffering and reveal more information, but it can also serve other purposes. Different decisions can therefore send players along very different routes.

That structure gives the adventure meaningful replay value. Two players may investigate the same passengers, use their cards differently and reach the conclusion through substantially different paths.

One decision carries serious consequences

The preview ended with a choice that immediately placed a heavy responsibility on Samuel: which passenger should be sacrificed to the supreme engineer?

Before making that decision, players must learn as much as possible about four people spread across two accessible rooms. Cards can be used to question them, push conversations further and uncover details about their circumstances. After roughly 20 minutes with Samuel, the choice already felt consequential rather than arbitrary.

Gamescom 2026 audience

A promising indie horror game

There are still major mysteries surrounding Dreadline Express. Why is the last human train under attack from grotesque aliens? Who are the passengers, and what is the train’s true purpose? The answers, along with the game’s branching investigations, give this unusual indie project plenty of room to surprise.

Dreadline Express is scheduled to come to Windows PC later in 2026. For readers who enjoy atmospheric interactive fiction and unusual horror, it is worth keeping an eye on alongside RETROCADE’s arcade news and gaming features.

Its chunky visual presentation could also appeal to players who appreciate the character of older hardware. If you are building a dedicated games room, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide can help with planning, while upright arcade machines and compact bartop arcades offer different ways to create a focused gaming setup.
