Valheim 1.0 finally leaves early access

After almost six years in development, Valheim has reached version 1.0. Iron Gate’s Norse survival adventure became a major multiplayer hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its influence can be seen in later survival games including Enshrouded and Windrose.

The full release does not reinvent the experience. Instead, it builds on the foundation that made Valheim so effective in 2021, adding more content and giving every biome a stronger sense of completion. After returning to the game following its 2023 Xbox launch through the console’s Game Preview programme, the result feels familiar, deeper and more polished.

For anyone who stopped playing years ago—or deliberately waited for the finished version—this is an excellent time to return. Valheim remains one of the finest survival games available outside of Minecraft.

A survival game with a clear sense of purpose

Gameplay from the Deep North update for Valheim

Many survival games rely entirely on open-ended progression, but Valheim gives its crafting and exploration a mythological reason. Odin fears the evil gathering in the tenth world, a realm separated from Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Fallen Vikings are reborn there, then gather resources, build settlements and grow stronger before challenging the bosses hidden across its biomes.

Additional cutscenes now provide more story context, although they are easy to ignore. Players can treat the game as a relaxed Norse-themed sandbox, or use its boss encounters as milestones that guide exploration and preparation. Either approach can lead to dozens of hours wandering through the procedurally generated world.

The fundamentals have aged particularly well. Its low-fi visual style remains distinctive, the soundtrack holds up through long sessions, and the physics-based construction system is still among the most satisfying in the genre. Version 1.0 offers more possibilities without discarding the qualities that made the original release compelling.

The Deep North completes the journey

Most of the new 1.0 content is aimed at the later stages of the adventure, especially the Deep North biome. The update adds weapons, armour, trinkets, food, crafting materials and building options, along with a grappling hook that makes movement through the environment more engaging.

Players starting a new world will need considerable time before reaching these additions, but that is part of the appeal. The expanded endgame means that each biome now feels like a more complete chapter rather than a placeholder on the way to something else.

The update is substantial without being disruptive. If Valheim did not appeal to you in 2021, version 1.0 is unlikely to change its basic identity. For everyone else, the completed Deep North and the extra tools make an already strong adventure more rounded.

A strong starting point across platforms

Players discovering Valheim for the first time on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2 can access the most content-rich and polished version from the outset. They can also play alongside friends on Windows PC or Xbox Series X through cross-play.

Those returning to the game should also keep an eye on future support. Iron Gate may continue updating Valheim, and the 1.0 release represents a confident point in the game’s development rather than an indication that its world can never grow further. For Australian players looking beyond the screen, the game’s emphasis on building, exploration and shared sessions also makes it a natural fit for a dedicated games room. RETROCADE’s arcade machines collection offers full-size cabinet options, while bartop arcades suit smaller spaces. Anyone planning a custom setup can compare options in the arcade machine buying guide.

Its return to the spotlight would be understandable. Valheim has not changed beyond recognition, but its original balance of survival systems, exploration and creative construction remains unusually durable. The 1.0 release confirms that its popularity was not merely a product of lockdown conditions.

Whether you are starting a fresh world or revisiting an old server, there is now more reason to sail, build, prepare for bosses and push into the northern frontier. Players working on a physical gaming room can also browse arcade parts for controls, monitors and repair projects.

Valheim 1.0 is best understood as a finished version of a game that already knew what it wanted to be. It preserves the atmosphere and systems that earned its following, fills out the late game and delivers a polished entry point for new adventurers.
