Final Fantasy Resonance is attempting something unusually ambitious: transforming the foundations of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a traditional console role-playing game while preserving the qualities that made its mobile predecessor distinctive.

The HD-2D adventure replaces the original game’s gacha structure with turn-based combat, class-based character development, voice acting and a new presentation designed for Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S. It also brings familiar faces from across the nearly 40-year history of Final Fantasy into a story led by an original cast.

Brave Exvius ended service in most territories two years ago. Resonance therefore serves as both a new game and a form of preservation for content that might otherwise have disappeared with a live-service shutdown. The challenge is making that history meaningful without requiring newcomers to know the mobile title or the wider series.

From mobile foundations to classic RPG structure

Producer Keisuke Nakashima and director Hiroto Furuya described the project as a substantial reworking rather than a simple port. The team wanted to retain the original game’s pixel art and characters, but rebuild its combat and narrative structure for a console RPG.

“The pixel art and the characters are very appealing and well done, so we wanted to maintain those,” Nakashima said through a translator. “However, this is going to be a new game for consoles, and a pixel art-based game, so we wanted to keep the strong elements, but at the same time, we didn’t really feel constricted by the original title because we are creating this as a new game.”

That process meant reconsidering how battles connect with the scenario, rather than carrying across systems designed around smartphone play. Nakashima said the project demands comparable work, time and budget to a new title, despite using Brave Exvius as its starting point.

His aim is to return to fundamentals that some players still associate with the series: approachable turn-based battles, jobs and classes, strong storytelling and detailed pixel artwork. The more recent series has increasingly explored 3D action, but the team believes there remains an audience for this older style of Final Fantasy.

A party system without gacha rarity

Removing gacha mechanics changes how characters fit into the game. Rarity is no longer intended to determine which heroes are inherently stronger, giving players more freedom to build a party around characters they enjoy rather than the most valuable random pulls.

The presentation has also been redesigned. Fixed cutscene animations and new voice acting are intended to give emotional scenes more impact as players meet Resonance‘s original cast and encounter figures from earlier games.

The new central characters include Rain, a conventional sword-wielding hero, and Lid, a spirited character aspiring to become a Cid. Classic figures such as Cloud Strife and Noctis Lucis Caelum appear as Visions, serving as secondary party members rather than replacing the game’s main cast.

How Vision Crystals bring back familiar heroes

Players discover Vision Crystals throughout the world. Approaching one reveals a character’s story before allowing that Vision to be equipped in battle. The system resembles the way a Persona can support a party member, while giving each returning character a place within Resonance‘s own world and mechanics.

Furuya said the team was conscious that a large collection of famous cameos could make the game appear to be a shallow crossover. Instead, the developers wanted each Vision to contribute to the narrative, introduce players to the character’s history and offer a distinct gameplay role.

“Maybe somebody’s played them all, maybe somebody hasn’t played any of them,” Furuya said. “Our goal with the Visions is to allow you to either relive the experience from the original game or get a rundown of it if it’s your first time.”

Recruiting a Vision can also involve questions about how the player would respond to events from that character’s story. During the previewed sequence involving Noctis from Final Fantasy XV, choosing responses that matched his outlook awarded perks and created a stronger sense of alignment.

That alignment is not meant to create a major balance advantage for long-time fans. The developers want newcomers and series veterans to have an essentially level playing field, with the questions adding flavour and synergy rather than making prior knowledge essential.

A smaller, deliberately chosen cast

Brave Exvius had more than 2,000 unlockable characters by the time its service ended. Resonance reduces that enormous roster to 26 returning characters, mostly protagonists from earlier mainline games alongside a selection of supporting figures.

Square Enix says the selection was based on which characters could add the most to the complete game and provide variety through different abilities. The developers also say there are currently no plans for additional content or downloadable expansions, with the priority being a finished experience at launch. That means characters such as Yuna and guest appearances including Ariana Grande are not expected to return in this version.

Nakashima connected that decision with the priorities of Team Asano, whose projects place the quality of the core experience ahead of planning post-launch content from the outset. The team is putting its development time into making the base game as complete as possible.

More than fan service

The developers maintain that the Vision characters are not simply decorative references. Their abilities, attacks and personal stories have been adapted to fit Resonance, while their presence is tied to the game’s broader narrative through the Vision Crystals.

The original protagonists remain the centre of the story, but the returning heroes appear to have a meaningful role in moving events forward. Furuya explained that the Vision system is an essential part of how the narrative comes together, rather than an optional collection of cameos added only for recognition.

“The main characters of the game are the main cast from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and they have their own story to tell,” Furuya said. “We have these Vision Crystals, but those actually play a much larger part in the story overall.”

Members of teams associated with other Final Fantasy games also reviewed how returning characters were represented. That consultation was intended to respect the identity and history of the original works while ensuring that every Vision had a useful place in the new game.

Rebuilding a lost live-service game

Nakashima and Furuya said they were not involved in Square Enix’s corporate decisions about live-service and console development. They did, however, reject the idea that using Brave Exvius as a foundation made the new project cheap or easy.

In their view, the smartphone game provided strong material to work from, but bringing it to consoles required a fresh approach across the battle system, story structure and presentation. The result is intended to preserve the source game’s strengths while standing independently for players who never experienced it.

That preservation angle is particularly relevant for live-service games, where shutdowns can make years of story, artwork and characters inaccessible. Resonance is not presented as a direct archival version of Brave Exvius; it is a substantial reinterpretation designed to give that material a lasting form.
