The Tears of the Kingdom story continues in print

While fans await Nintendo’s highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is receiving a substantial new companion book this October. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Secrets of the Zonai examines the development of the 2023 adventure and arrives during The Legend of Zelda series’ 40th anniversary.

Published by Dark Horse, the book follows the publisher’s earlier Zelda reference works, including the 2013 edition of Hyrule Historia. The new hardcover is scheduled for release on 20 October.

What Secrets of the Zonai includes

Designed as a follow-up to 2018’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — Creating a Champion, the 472-page hardcover also complements The Legend of Zelda Encyclopedia. The contents combine artwork, production material, Hyrule history and interviews with key members of the development team.

  • 50 pages of illustrations, character artwork and promotional images.
  • Nearly 300 pages of sketches, development notes, rough designs, concept art and recollections covering the game’s creation.
  • More than 80 pages exploring Hyrule’s history, including the Zonai’s mysterious past through to the events of the game.
  • Interviews with producer Eiji Aonuma, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and art director Satoru Takizawa.

Standard and Hero’s editions

Secrets of the Zonai will be sold in two formats. The Standard Edition hardcover has an MSRP of $59.99 and contains the behind-the-scenes material described above.

The $119.99 deluxe Hero’s Edition includes the book with an exclusive cover, a cloth map of the Depths, an art print featuring Link and the Sages, and a replica of Zelda’s Secret Stone.

Both editions are currently available to pre-order from Dark Horse ahead of the October release.
