Civilization 7: Earthrise will take Firaxis Games’ strategy series beyond Earth in 2027, while a set of free updates adds a new era, fresh systems and quality-of-life improvements before the paid expansion arrives.
Three major Civilization 7 updates are planned
Firaxis Games and 2K outlined the roadmap during a PAX West panel. The first major release is Update 1.5.0, scheduled to launch across all platforms later this month. Its focus is usability and map variety, with an Earth map, historically accurate starting locations and improvements to map generation, diplomacy’s influence system and the user interface.
Arc of Tomorrow adds the Atomic Age
The first major update of 2027 is called Arc of Tomorrow. Its headline feature is a fourth Age at the end of the game’s timeline: the Atomic Age. Designed to represent the modern era, it will introduce new urban architecture, technology and civic trees, social policies and narrative events.
The update will also expand the economy with goods including enriched uranium and great works of film. Gandhi, one of the franchise’s best-known leaders, will join Civilization 7 through Arc of Tomorrow. Players can sign up to playtest the update later this year, ahead of its wider release in 2027.
Earthrise turns the campaign towards the stars
Due later in 2027, Earthrise is a paid expansion that adds space-focused content across every Age. During Antiquity and Exploration, players will be able to research the solar system and wider reaches of space, including naming celestial bodies they discover.
The Modern Age will introduce orbital missions around Earth. Once the Atomic Age begins, players can establish a space agency, explore the solar system and find resources that can be put to use on their home planet.
Earthrise is not limited to space exploration. New unit abilities and technologies will allow players to reshape terrain, while civil engineering structures are intended to help societies respond to natural disasters and global warming. Further details have not yet been announced, although the expansion’s science-fiction direction may interest players who enjoyed Civilization: Beyond Earth.
What Australian players should know
For now, the roadmap begins with Update 1.5.0 later this month, followed by the Arc of Tomorrow playtest and its 2027 release. Earthrise will then complete the planned sequence with its paid launch later in 2027.
