Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 has appeared in a new State of Play Japan trailer, offering a closer look at its anime-inspired combat and extensive avatar creation system.

The footage follows a player-created fighter using recognisable techniques from across the series. The presentation cuts to the characters associated with each move, including Vegeta’s kicks, Hit’s rapid punches and Android 17’s charged energy attack.

Players will be able to build an original warrior and tailor how that character fights, transforms and moves through battles. The trailer also shows the avatar changing between human and alien forms before unleashing a Kamehameha.

Six avatar races and more than 130 characters

The character creator is built around six distinct avatar races, with Androids joining the selection as a new option. Customisation extends beyond appearance, with Fighting Styles, Soul Assist, Awoken Skills, Soul Switch and Abilities all contributing to a player’s combat setup.

More than 130 characters, including non-playable characters, can teach the player’s avatar techniques. That allows players to assemble a moveset influenced by familiar figures such as Goku and Frieza while creating a fighter with a personal approach to combat.

When does Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 take place?

The action RPG is set in a distant future timeline, after the events of the main Dragon Ball story. Its specific setting is Age 1000, placing it 148 years after Xenoverse 2 and 150 years after the first Xenoverse. Both earlier games also take place well after the conclusion of the main series.

Dimps is returning as developer after creating the first two entries, which launched in 2015 and 2016 respectively. As in those games, players can call on major Dragon Ball characters and incorporate their signature attacks into their own abilities.

A major change to Super Saiyan transformations

The trailer has also prompted concern among some fans over a change to transformation duration. In the previous games, activating Super Saiyan allowed the form to remain in place for the rest of a mission. Xenoverse 3 instead limits how long the player can stay transformed.

That adjustment may significantly affect mission strategy and character builds, although its full impact will not be clear until release. The game is currently expected to arrive sometime in 2027, with no more specific launch date provided in the supplied details.
