Supergirl will begin streaming on HBO Max on 10 September, following a disappointing cinema run for the second film in James Gunn’s developing DC Universe.
Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the film arrived in cinemas earlier this year with a story inspired by the well-regarded Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics. It ultimately earned $126 million worldwide and opened with $38 million, a result compared with the troubled opening of Joker: Folie à Deux.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios have now confirmed that Australian viewers and audiences elsewhere will be able to watch the film on HBO Max from 10 September.
What is Supergirl about?
The story follows Kara as she searches for Krem of the Yellow Hill after the villain poisons Krypto. Her pursuit leads her to Ruthey, a young girl seeking revenge because Krem killed her father.
Drawing on the spirit of True Grit, the unlikely pair travel across the galaxy while pursuing their shared mission. Craig Gillespie directed the film, with Ana Nogueira credited as writer. The screenplay is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series.

Will Milly Alcock return as Supergirl?
Yes. Despite the film’s weak critical and commercial reception, Alcock is confirmed to reprise her role in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on 9 July 2027.
That film is expected to bring back members of the Superman cast and will introduce Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Pierre can currently be seen as part of the television series Lanterns.
Alcock’s performance as Kara has been positively noted, although the film’s broader execution and story attracted criticism. One assessment argued that it did not match the bold, unusual approach taken by Gunn’s Superman, suggesting that the new DC Universe had an identity but had not pushed it far enough.
