Peacock now has the complete Kelvin-timeline Star Trek trilogy

J.J. Abrams established his blockbuster credentials through projects including Lost, Super 8 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Before taking the helm of a major space-fantasy franchise for Disney, however, he helped reinvent another iconic science-fiction property with a bold new beginning.

That 2009 Star Trek film, along with its two follow-ups, is now streaming as a complete trilogy on Peacock. For Australian viewers checking the catalogue, it offers a straightforward way to revisit the modern reboot era in one sitting.

A different beginning for Kirk and Spock

The 2009 film introduces an alternate timeline commonly known as the Kelvin-verse. Its story diverges from the established continuity after the Romulan Nero, played by Eric Bana, attacks the USS Kelvin.

George Kirk, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, dies while defending the ship. His son, James T. Kirk, grows up away from Starfleet and without the family path that shaped the original version of the character. Captain Christopher Pike, played by Bruce Greenwood, eventually encourages Kirk, portrayed by Chris Pine, to join Starfleet Academy.

Why the Kelvin films still stand apart

The trilogy is not simply a scene-for-scene remake of earlier adventures. It borrows ideas, themes and familiar pieces from Star Trek history while giving its central crew fresh personalities and different relationships.

Karl Urban’s Leonard “Bones” McCoy is the closest match to the earlier interpretation, while Chris Pine’s Kirk, Zachary Quinto’s Spock and Zoe Saldaña’s Nyota Uhura take their own paths. The films also draw on earlier stories: Star Trek Beyond, for example, includes a Genesis Device-style idea and a planet that recall The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock.

A memorable return from Leonard Nimoy

The new cast also benefited from Leonard Nimoy’s return as an older Spock. His presence created a direct connection between the new timeline and the classic character, while allowing Nimoy to offer guidance to Quinto’s younger version.

That handover remains one of the trilogy’s most affecting choices. It respects the character’s history without preventing the new crew from establishing its own identity.

All three films are available together

The trilogy consists of Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). While a fourth film has not materialised, the existing three movies form a complete modern arc and continue to attract interest from fans who want more of this version of the crew.

The Kelvin timeline also sits alongside newer productions such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which recasts familiar bridge officers for a different era. For a quick refresher on the reboot films, you can explore this Star Trek reference page before settling in.
