Civilization VII is free on Steam for one week

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is available to play at no cost on Steam for one week, giving strategy fans a chance to test Firaxis’ latest 4X game before deciding whether to buy it.

The Free Play Week celebrates the Civilization franchise’s 35th anniversary. It runs from September 3 at 10 a.m. PT until September 10 at 10 a.m. PT, so players have a full seven days to explore its turn-based campaigns.

If the trial wins you over, the game is currently discounted by 50% to $34.99. Australian players should check Steam for the local equivalent and the promotion’s exact timing in their region. You can play Civilization VII free on Steam right now.

A better test for a divisive strategy game

Civilization VII launched in 2025 and has since received several substantial updates. The most significant was May’s Test of Time update, which addressed systems that had attracted criticism at launch.

One major change concerns the game’s three historical Ages. Players can now retain their starting civilization for an entire campaign instead of being required to choose a different civilization whenever an Age ends. New systems called Syncretism and Affirmation also provide more control over the direction a civilization takes.

Those revisions have improved the overall experience, although the game still has weaker areas. Diplomacy and several less-developed systems remain rough around the edges, but the recent work indicates that Firaxis has a clearer long-term direction for Civilization VII.

More Civilization news is coming at PAX West

The free week coincides with a Civilization panel at PAX West in Seattle on September 5. Creative director Ed Beach, lead producer Tom Shaw and game director Matt Owens are scheduled to appear at the 2 p.m. PT event, which will also be livestreamed.

The panel will cover the franchise’s past, present and future. Find details about the Civilization panel if you want to follow the discussion from home.
