Inde Navarrette is following her breakout performance in Obsession with a very different kind of genre film: Apple Original Films’ The Waffle House Index.
Navarrette’s role as Nikki helped make Curry Barker’s horror film one of the year’s unexpected successes. The movie turned a seemingly straightforward story about desire into an unsettling possession thriller, leaving viewers keen to see what the actor would tackle next.
Her upcoming projects have attracted plenty of interest. She has reportedly met with filmmakers connected to Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film and Heat 2. Her next confirmed major role, however, is in The Waffle House Index, where she will also serve as an executive producer.
What is The Waffle House Index about?
The title refers to a real informal system used to gauge the impact of a hurricane. It looks at whether a local Waffle House is operating as usual, offering a reduced menu or closed completely. The film takes that practical measure and builds an increasingly outrageous thriller around it.
Navarrette plays a waitress whose difficult shift takes a terrifying turn when an armed stranger enters the restaurant. The situation then expands into a disaster involving:
- A huge flood
- Killer crocodiles
- A nuclear explosion
- A hidden bunker beneath the restaurant
- Aliens
That combination makes the project a sharp change of direction after Obsession, while still keeping Navarrette firmly within inventive genre territory. She has also completed Invertigo, a thriller about teenagers trapped on a roller coaster, and has been linked to Marvel’s X-Men project.
Apple and Plan B reunite
The Waffle House Index is another collaboration between Apple and Plan B Entertainment. Plan B is led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, and previously worked with Apple on Pitt’s racing drama F1.
The company has also produced the horror film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and is preparing to film The Bell Jar, a drama directed by Sarah Polley. Further project details for The Waffle House Index have not been provided.
