Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 is edging closer to release, and the extended Netflix showcase on 27 August, combined with recent leaks, has pushed anticipation to another level.
That new footage has also encouraged fans to compare the upcoming game with Grand Theft Auto 5. Side-by-side posts across X highlight changes in animation, lighting, character detail, crowd density and environmental rendering.
GTA 6 compared with GTA 5 in motion
One widely shared comparison places GTA 6 protagonist Jason diving into the water beside Michael performing a similar action in GTA 5.

Not everyone prefers the newer animation. Some viewers believe the dive looks more convincing in GTA 5. Jason’s backflip can appear less realistic from a physics perspective, although the more theatrical movement may be an intentional trade-off.
Greater draw distance and denser crowds
Improvements to crowd density and draw distance were already identified in the 25 August leak, but they remain among the areas impressing GTA 5 players most. A parachuting comparison makes the difference in skyline detail particularly clear.

The expanded visibility in GTA 6 may be connected to the game being limited to 30 frames per second at launch, but the scale and clarity shown in these comparisons are still notable. GTA 5 first released in 2013, making the generational gap easier to see.
Character models show the biggest leap
Character rendering may provide the most striking visual contrast. Reddit user Noru122 has been attempting to recreate promotional images from GTA 6 in GTA 5 whenever a new trailer arrives. It is not a perfectly even test, since the newer images were carefully produced for a high-budget advertising campaign, but the results still make for revealing side-by-side comparisons.

A more direct comparison comes from images showing the same character in both games.

The difference is especially pronounced when comparing Valentina, an NPC in Grand Theft Auto Online, with her GTA 6 counterpart. Valentina was not part of the original 2013 release; she was added in the Money Fronts update in June 2025.
Night-time lighting raises the bar
Lighting appears to be another major focus for GTA 6. Night scenes show stronger contrast and a more convincing sense of illumination than the equivalent footage from its predecessor.

GTA 5 received high-resolution ray-traced reflection improvements after the PC release of Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced in 2025. Even with those upgrades, its night-time lighting does not appear to match what GTA 6 is showing.
These comparisons should still be viewed cautiously until the finished game is running on consumer hardware. If the footage genuinely represents the experience on a standard launch-edition PS5, Rockstar’s artists and engineers have achieved a substantial visual step forward.
