Atlus has explained why Persona 4 Revival features a completely new English voice cast, but comments from several original actors have left fans questioning whether availability was the only factor.
In an interview, director Kazuhisa Wada said the development team struggled to secure enough members of the original cast. Almost two decades after the original game, many of those performers have become prominent names across games and animation.
“There were quite a few people who we weren’t able to get,” Wada said. “So we’re like, ‘OK, I guess we have to kind of once again roll up our sleeves. Alright, let’s start over. Let’s get a whole new cast in and let’s do our best.’”
Original Persona 4 actors say they were not approached
The explanation is difficult to reconcile with comments made by several original performers in 2025. Yuri Lowenthal, who played Yosuke and is also widely known as Peter Parker in Insomniac’s Spider-Man, revealed that he had asked Atlus to reprise the role but was turned down. His post was later deleted.
“And for those who keep asking, no, I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake. I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don’t want me to come back.”
Amanda Winn Lee, the original voice of Yukiko, also said she had not been asked to return. She made that clarification in a May 30, 2025 post.
Erin Fitzgerald, who played Chie Satonaka, shared a similar message. She said she had not been asked to reprise the character, while also expressing gratitude for having performed as Chie across multiple Persona 4 games.
“For those asking, I have not been asked to reprise my role as Chie Satonaka in the Persona 4 remake.”
Why the recasting remains controversial
The English cast attached to the original investigation team includes several performers whose careers grew substantially after Persona 4 launched. Alongside Lowenthal, the wider cast includes Johnny Yong Bosch, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey.
Scheduling and availability may have been genuine obstacles, particularly after so many years. However, the possibility of keeping production costs under control has also been raised as a potential reason for the recasting. That remains speculation rather than a confirmed explanation from Atlus.
The roles have changed hands in later Persona 4 spin-offs before. Troy Baker and Laura Bailey were replaced by Matt Mercer and Ashley Burch, respectively, and those replacement performers have since become major names in their own right.
Wada said he respected the work of the original cast. That could suggest Atlus preferred to begin again with a full new ensemble rather than retain only some returning actors. Still, the decision feels more complicated when multiple original performers say they were willing to come back but were not contacted.
What the new cast means for Persona 4 Revival
Recasting does not necessarily determine the quality of the remake, but voice performances are closely tied to how players remember the Investigation Team. The new actors will therefore face the difficult task of establishing familiar characters for a modern audience while following performances that helped define the original release.
