Halloween: The Game will no longer launch on PS5 in Japan after its developers failed to secure a CERO age rating for the asymmetrical horror game. The decision follows the cancellation of its Australian release, which was attributed to the game’s use of drugs.
The developers have chosen not to modify the game’s content to meet Japanese classification requirements. They say changes to the violence and nudity would weaken the original film’s worldview and compromise the gameplay experience they want to deliver.
Xbox and PC launches remain scheduled
The Japanese release will still proceed on Xbox and PC on Wednesday, 9 September 2026. The PS5 version, however, has been cancelled because Sony requires a CERO rating in Japan for games that would receive an 18+ classification under the International Age Rating Coalition system.
The development team announced that its PS5 rating had been cancelled because it could not obtain a domestic CERO rating for the title’s visceral violence and nudity. The announcement was shared on August 30, 2026, alongside the full statement.
Why the platforms are treated differently
CERO classification is mandatory for physical video-game releases in Japan, but it is not required for digital-only titles. Digital games can instead use internationally recognised IARC ratings, which are accepted by all platforms in Japan in principle.
PlayStation applies an additional restriction: games that would be rated 18+ through IARC still need a CERO classification. That rule prevents Halloween: The Game from releasing digitally on PS5, while Xbox and PC can launch as planned.
CERO is known for strict standards around full-frontal nudity and graphic gore across entertainment media. Those requirements have previously resulted in international games receiving less violent or less explicit Japanese versions, often leading to other titles like Resident Evil: Requiem being altered for the region.
