The long-delayed Fate/Extra Record remake is changing direction, with a new publisher and development team following major upheaval at Type Moon Studio BB. Studio director Kazuya Nino has also left the project.

A new team takes over development

The remake of the 2010 PSP dungeon-crawling RPG was announced in 2020 and was initially scheduled for release in 2024. Its troubled production has since been marked by repeated delays, culminating in an indefinite postponement earlier this year after Bandai Namco Entertainment withdrew as publisher, forcing the cancellation of all Japanese pre-orders for the cult-favorite.

Aniplex will now replace Bandai Namco as publisher. Development is also moving from Type Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, the team behind the 2025 anime fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls, with Famitsu reporting the change.

Why the remake matters to Fate fans

Fate/Extra is one of the many branches of the wider Fate/Stay Night franchise, which has expanded across visual novels, anime, manga and video games. The original PSP release received positive reviews and placed players in a dungeon-crawling RPG set within the series’ dark fantasy universe.

Type Moon established Type Moon Studio BB in 2019 as a dedicated game-development subsidiary. Kazuya Nino, a former Square Enix and Atlus director known for work on Trauma Center and Dragon Quest Builders, led the studio. The Fate/Extra remake was announced as its first project.

Kazuya Nino leaves Studio BB

The publisher and developer changes were announced alongside a significant restructuring intended to address the problems affecting the studio. The process includes Nino’s departure from Type Moon Studio BB and his removal from the remake’s development leadership.

In a statement shared on his social media account and reported by HDKirin on Bluesky, Nino said he had left the studio for personal reasons and had already stepped away from Fate/Extra Record. He also requested that his name be removed from the game’s credits, taking responsibility for the current situation and apologising to fans waiting for the release.

“I have made the decision to leave Type Moon Studio BB, as well as my role as director on Fate/Extra Record, with immediate effect.”

Nino added that he respected the team continuing the project. Although he does not plan to comment publicly on the game’s future, he said he hopes the restructured production and planned changes will meet audience expectations.

When will Fate/Extra Record return?

The project’s status remains uncertain. The game’s existing social media accounts and official website are scheduled to close on 7 September, while further information about its revised state is expected next month.

The scale of the changes makes the next announcement important for fans and anyone following long-running Japanese game productions. Until then, there is no confirmed release date in the available information.

Nino’s original statement was dated August 31, 2026.
