The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is approaching its tenth anniversary, but CD Projekt Red is preparing a remaster to give the acclaimed RPG a new lease on life. Alongside upgraded visuals and reworked combat, the studio has confirmed a practical feature that will matter greatly to returning players.
Players will be able to bring their existing save files into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. Previously earned achievements and trophies will transfer too, meaning long-running adventures with Geralt can continue without starting again from the beginning.
CD Projekt Red confirmed the details after receiving a large number of questions about the project. In a post on X, the developer said current saves would work with the upgrade and allow players to return to the Path where they stopped.
Why save transfers are a major remaster feature
Save compatibility may not attract as much attention as sharper graphics, but it can be one of the most important parts of a re-release. A decade-old RPG can represent tens or even hundreds of hours of progress, and losing that investment is a significant barrier to revisiting it.
The approach also contrasts with Square Enix’s recently announced Switch 2 versions of several games. Those releases do not provide an upgrade path or save compatibility for owners of the original Switch editions, making CD Projekt Red’s player-focused decision particularly welcome.
A free upgrade ahead of new Witcher content
CD Projekt Red previously announced that the remaster will be a free upgrade for existing owners. The Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions will also become available as free upgrades.
The remaster is scheduled for release on September 29. It will arrive a few months before the studio’s next expansion for the RPG, Songs of the Past, which is planned for release next year.
That timing gives returning players a chance to revisit the world before the new adventure arrives. CD Projekt Red also plans to release The Witcher 4 in 2028, setting up a busy period for fans of the series.
