Grand Theft Auto 6 has triggered an unusually personal debate online. Following the game’s extended reveal trailer last week, TikTok users began arguing that using its romantic features could count as cheating in a real relationship.

The discussion centres on interactions with Lucia and Jason, including holding hands, sending messages and maintaining an in-game relationship. One TikTok user said their fiancé should not play GTA 6 because a virtual girlfriend can become upset when players fail to reply.

IGN highlighted several clips from users presenting the mechanic as a relationship deal-breaker. The claims quickly attracted millions of views, with some videos reportedly passing five million each.

That reach does not necessarily reflect widespread agreement. Most comments beneath the clips appear to reject the idea that interacting with pixels, visiting a virtual strip club or going on a digital date amounts to infidelity. The attention may instead show how easily a provocative take can become engagement bait on TikTok.

There is also a criticism of how the trend has been framed. Some observers argue that turning a small selection of videos into a broad story about women and gaming encourages an exaggerated culture-war reading of a game mechanic.

“This is mining a handful of TikTok videos for an article with the blatant subtext of ‘women, eh?’ and this site laps it up,” wrote Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.eurosky.social) on Bluesky.

The more likely explanation is that the first wave of viral reactions created an easy template for others to copy. That does not mean nobody sincerely feels uncomfortable with fictional romance, but there is little evidence that a substantial number of people believe a date with Lucia or Jason should justify a breakup or divorce.

Where does fictional romance cross a line?

The controversy still raises a more interesting question about emotional boundaries in games. Most players distinguish clearly between a fictional character and a real partner, yet modern games increasingly invite players to text, flirt, form attachments and make relationship choices.

That leaves room for uncomfortable hypotheticals. Could a player’s preference for a Love and Deepspace character matter to their partner? Would an AI chatbot spouse change how a relationship is understood? Might prioritising a Persona 5 character’s messages over a partner’s feel hurtful? And would a sexualised Baldur’s Gate 3 mod create a genuine relationship conflict?

Those questions are about communication and agreed boundaries, not a universal rule that fictional romance equals cheating. As GTA 6 is expected to become one of the most widely discussed games ever, it will inevitably attract both serious debate and deliberately outrageous opinions.
