The Witcher 4 will not appear at Gamescom, but CD Projekt RED has offered its clearest timing update so far: the Ciri-led fantasy open-world RPG is targeting a 2028 launch window.
Songs of the Past takes the spotlight
In a short video released before the event, CD Projekt RED joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski explained that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion Songs of the Past will receive substantial attention at Gamescom.
The expansion will be available on the show floor at the Cologne-based event. Fans watching from home can follow livestreams running from August 25 to 30, with Nowakowski teasing the possibility of “a surprise or two” during the broadcasts.
His comments did not indicate that The Witcher 4 will be shown at the event. The studio’s Gamescom invitation was shared under #gamescom, alongside a video link and an August 24, 2026 announcement.
A 2028 target, not a fixed date
Although the company is not ready to announce a precise release date, Nowakowski said The Witcher 4 is currently “targeting” a 2028 launch window. That wording describes a development goal rather than a firm commitment.
With Songs of the Past due next year, fans will have a new Witcher adventure to play before the next mainline instalment arrives. The expansion will provide the series’ next major release while work continues on the larger open-world project.
Ciri becomes the lead
The Witcher 4 was first announced at The Game Awards in 2024. The game passes the central role from Geralt of Rivia to his surrogate daughter, Ciri, marking a significant change for the RPG series.
Geralt was the main character throughout the previous RPGs, although Ciri could already be controlled in selected sections of The Witcher 3. Ciara Berkeley will voice Ciri in the new game, taking over from Jo Wyatt, who performed the role in The Witcher 3.
What fans can expect next
For now, Gamescom coverage will focus on Songs of the Past and whatever surprises appear during the event’s livestreams. The 2028 target means the next mainline adventure remains several years away, with no exact launch date confirmed.
