The Super Nintendo has one of gaming’s strongest libraries. Nintendo Switch Online includes 77 SNES games, although several major third-party favourites are absent, including Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
Even so, the selection showcases an extraordinary period for Nintendo. Between the inventive NES era and the move into 3D with Nintendo 64, teams led by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka produced an exceptional run of first-party games.

10. Mario Paint
Released in 1992 with an SNES mouse, Mario Paint is an inventive creative package rather than a conventional platform game. It combines drawing, animation and music tools with entertaining minigames, memorable music and Nintendo sprites.
On Switch, you need a USB mouse to use it properly. Switch 2 owners can instead use the Joy-Con 2 in mouse mode. It is a useful reminder that playful interface design has always been part of Nintendo’s appeal.
9. Kirby Super Star
Masahiro Sakurai’s enthusiasm for remixes and unusual game structures is already clear in this 1996 Kirby collection. Kirby Super Star packages several distinct adventures around the character’s copy abilities.
Its contents range from a racing game and a Metroidvania-style adventure to boss rushes, scrolling shoot-’em-up stages and variations on traditional platforming. The bite-sized format makes it ideal for short sessions.
8. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
Rare’s SNES trilogy stood out for its rendered visuals, oversized sprites and distinctive presentation. The games may not match Nintendo’s own platformers for variety and refinement, but they deliver polished action, hidden secrets, excellent music and strong atmosphere.
Of the three, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest is the standout. Its confident level design and memorable soundtrack make it the best entry in the trilogy.
7. Panel de Pon
Western players may know Panel de Pon as Tetris Attack, the version that replaced its characters with Yoshi and applied the Tetris name. Beneath that branding is an expertly designed match-three puzzle game from Intelligent Systems, the studio behind Advance Wars and Fire Emblem.
There is no complicated gimmick to learn: swap panels, create matches and keep the chain going. It is equally effective as a solo challenge or a two-player battle.
6. EarthBound
The SNES library contains many celebrated role-playing games, but relatively few are available through Nintendo Switch Online. EarthBound is the wonderfully strange exception.
Created by Shigesato Itoi and Satoru Iwata, it uses a familiar RPG structure to examine contemporary Americana through a child’s perspective. Its world combines satire, alien invasions and even murderous taxi cabs into an unforgettable adventure.
5. Super Mario Kart
The 1992 original established the essential formula for a racing series that would become a global phenomenon. Its track layouts, items and competitive multiplayer all remain immediately recognisable.
It also feels more technical than later entries. The compact circuits and grippy handling reward precision, while the two-player mode remains one of the best ways to experience the game.

4. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Although presented as a follow-up to Super Mario World, Yoshi’s Island is really the beginning of Yoshi’s own platforming series. It is playful, inventive and unlike almost anything else Nintendo made at the time.
Crayon-like artwork and watercolour effects give the game its storybook appearance, while the Super FX chip supports its elastic, wobbly physics. Egg throwing, tongue attacks and slapstick hazards create a constantly surprising platformer.
3. Super Metroid
Super Metroid remains the defining entry in its series and a landmark for exploration-driven action games. Its interconnected world encourages careful observation, backtracking and experimentation as Samus gains new abilities.
The atmosphere is just as important as the map. Its isolated, threatening science-fiction setting is conveyed through lonely environments and restrained storytelling, creating a powerful sense of discovery.

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The third Zelda game returned to the original’s top-down perspective after the more divisive design of Zelda 2: Link’s Adventure. It refined that viewpoint into a richly structured adventure built from dungeons, items, secrets and interconnected systems.
Its defining idea is the dark mirror-world, a second landscape that transforms the familiar map and reshapes the journey. Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka created it less than a year after Super Mario World, an extraordinary achievement in itself.
