Ewan McGregor became internationally recognised through 1996’s Trainspotting, the stylish and brutally bleak adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel about heroin addiction. Two years earlier, however, Shallow Grave had already established the volatile screen partnership that would help make that breakthrough possible.
A grim rehearsal for Trainspotting
Released in 1994, Shallow Grave is a Scottish black comedy thriller built around three collaborators: director Danny Boyle, screenwriter John Hodge and McGregor. It was Boyle and Hodge’s first feature film, and only McGregor’s second. The result is rough around the edges, but its nervous pace, abrasive humour and appetite for shock give it a distinctive energy.
Viewed today, the film captures Boyle developing the hyperactive visual style that would become his trademark. McGregor, meanwhile, shows an early version of the mischievous charm he would repeatedly turn towards more dangerous and unsettling characters.

Three flatmates and a suitcase of cash
Alex, played by McGregor, shares an expensive Edinburgh flat with Juliet, played by Kerry Fox, and David, played by Christopher Eccleston. Alex is a talkative journalist, Juliet is a sardonic doctor and David is a restrained accountant. Together, they behave as though their friendship makes them an exclusive club.
The opening scene sets that tone immediately. The trio interview potential tenants for their spare room, treating each applicant as an intruder who must earn the privilege of joining them. Their successful choice is Hugo, a taciturn stranger played by Keith Allen, the father of Lily and Alfie Allen. Juliet is particularly intrigued by him, enjoying the power games that define her relationships with the other two.
Hugo’s arrival changes everything. He is soon found dead and naked in his room, apparently from a drug overdose. He has also left behind a suitcase containing millions of pounds in cash.
Friendship collapses under pressure
The flatmates decide to keep the money and hide Hugo’s body. Alex assumes his crime-reporting experience gives him an advantage, but his plan contains a crucial flaw that the film’s title hints at. More damaging still, the three friends cannot agree on who should handle the most unpleasant work or what the cash should ultimately become.
David grows increasingly paranoid, Alex becomes more impulsive and Juliet tries to manipulate both men. Their seemingly unbreakable alliance begins to fracture just as two violent criminals start searching for Hugo and his missing fortune.
The sharp edge of Cool Britannia
Shallow Grave remains an early example of the 1990s Cool Britannia mood: flashy, cynical and fuelled by restless confidence. Its plotting is broad rather than intricate, and its characters are sketched in bold strokes instead of detailed psychological portraits. Even so, the film lands its major turns with force.
Its satire is aimed at the arrogance and casual cruelty of its young protagonists, but the movie shares some of their swagger. That contradiction is part of its appeal. It understands the intoxicating feeling of believing that your friendship group is smarter, funnier and more invulnerable than everyone else.
That makes the film an unusually effective story about life with flatmates. The shared jokes, private codes and everyday intimacy create a powerful bond, but the same closeness makes betrayal especially destructive once money and fear enter the picture.
McGregor’s dangerous charm
Fox, Eccleston and McGregor all make strong impressions, yet McGregor gives the film its central spark. Alex is charismatic enough to draw people in and arrogant enough to become infuriating. His confidence repeatedly tips into recklessness, while a wicked glint keeps him watchable even when his behaviour becomes difficult to tolerate.
McGregor would later play far more relaxed figures, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Shallow Grave preserves an earlier, sharper version of his screen persona. It is a dark, energetic cult thriller and a fascinating snapshot of Boyle, Hodge and McGregor before Trainspotting turned their collaboration into a defining force of 1990s British cinema.
