The Sims 4 is heading back to school with two new movie-themed kits based on Mean Girls and Clueless. The crossover content arrives on Thursday, 27 August, giving players a selection of outfits and a small number of Build Mode additions inspired by the two films.

What the two kits include

These releases are kits rather than a full expansion pack. EA says each one will cost $3.99, making them cheaper than other kits, although the total number of items has not yet been announced. Most of the content is intended for Create-a-Sim, with two Build Mode items also included across each kit’s offering.

Items described so far include:

  • Miniskirts
  • Sweaters
  • A festive hat
  • The Mathletes signature team jacket
  • A velour tracksuit
  • A plaid outfit set
  • A button-front skirt
  • Layered tops
  • Workout outfits
  • Tai-inspired overalls

EA has shared further information in its EA blog post.

Why some players are holding back

The film references have attracted excitement from players who want to recreate familiar looks in The Sims 4. At the same time, the announcement has met strong resistance from other members of the community, who say they will not purchase new downloadable content from EA.

The criticism is linked to EA’s buyout by Saudi Arabia and private equity. Some players argue that this ownership sits uneasily beside the series’ long-standing reputation for LGBTQ+ representation and its history as a welcoming space for queer players. The Sims team has previously said the buyout would not affect The Sims 4, but the issue remains a point of tension for parts of the community.

“Last year I would have bought…this year, I don’t purchase from Saudi Arabia. You no longer deserve my hard-earned money,” one user wrote beneath the reveal trailer, adding the hashtag “#BoycottEA”.

Another commenter questioned the fit between the game’s usual presentation of women in skirts and Saudi Arabia’s values. Ongoing bugs have also contributed to player frustration, making the kits’ reception about more than their licensed fashion.

A small release with a larger conversation

For players focused purely on recreating Mean Girls or Clueless outfits, the two $3.99 kits offer a relatively inexpensive way to add those styles. For others, the ownership concerns and the game’s technical problems have outweighed the appeal of the crossover.
