Kingdom Hearts had a memorable presence at this year’s D23 event. A new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer revealed a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, playable appearances for Mickey, Donald and Goofy, and the long-awaited return of Riku, Sora’s friend and rival.
The “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” panel also brought together Haley Joel Osment and David Gallagher, the long-standing English voices of Sora and Riku. Although both actors have played the characters since they were teenagers, they had never performed together live during the series’ 25-year history.
That changed when the pair performed the closing scene from Kingdom Hearts II. The moment was warmly received at first, but it gained a more tragic significance the following day after the death of Hayden Panettiere, the original English voice of Kairi.
A Kingdom Hearts II reunion on stage
The scene performed by Osment and Gallagher takes place in the Realm of Darkness. After following connected but separate paths since the first game, Sora and Riku finally have time to speak openly. Their conversation changes when a bottle reaches the shore, carrying a message from Kairi, the third member of their childhood trio from Destiny Islands.
In the original ending, Sora reads Kairi’s letter while their voices overlap. A portal then opens, allowing Sora, Riku and Kairi to return to their home island together. You can watch the end of the first Kingdom Hearts to see the emotional foundation of that relationship.
Panettiere was not present at D23 and had not voiced Kairi since 2010’s Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Her absence was acknowledged during the live performance. Khleo Thomas, who moderated the panel and narrated the scene, explained that neither Panettiere nor current Kairi voice actor Alyson Stoner was available to perform the overlapping passage.
“We hear the text of the letter read out loud. Sora and Kairi’s voices blend together. Today, we’ll leave it to Sora.”
The missing third member of the trio
After Osment and Gallagher finished, Thomas invited the audience to join a group selfie. He suggested that the stage needed one more special guest, joking that Sora and Riku should be joined by Mickey.
Viewers watching the panel with friends could reasonably have expected Panettiere or Stoner to appear as Kairi. Instead, a performer in a Kingdom Hearts Mickey mascot costume joined the actors. It was an entertaining conclusion, even if it left the original trio incomplete.
At the time, that decision could be dismissed because Stoner did not voice the original 2006 scene and Panettiere had left the role years earlier. The possibility of seeing the original Destiny Islands trio together again still remained. Panettiere’s death, reported the next day, made that hope impossible.

Hayden Panettiere’s lasting Kairi performance
Panettiere built a substantial body of work during her short career, but her portrayal of Kairi remains especially meaningful to many players. Her performance in the series’ early years gave the character a distinctive warmth, including during her teenage years.
The exchange between Sora and Kairi was also a formative emotional moment for many fans. Stoner deserves recognition for taking on the role, but Panettiere’s interpretation remains closely tied to some of the franchise’s most important scenes and memories.
Panettiere had been away from Kingdom Hearts for many years, yet her voice continued to define key parts of the series. After the D23 performance and the news that followed, the world of Kingdom Hearts felt darker without it.
